Thorpedo Anna, the reigning 2024 Horse of the Year, was dominant in her second start of the year, winning the Apple Blossom Handicap last Saturday at Oaklawn Park by 4 ¼ lengths for trainer Kenny McPeek with Brian Hernandez Jr. aboard. Following an undefeated start to 2025, “The Grizzly” has moved into third in this year’s overall standings among North America-based racehorses with $971,250 in earnings. The Apple Blossom was Thorpedo Anna’s sixth career Grade 1 win as well as her fourth consecutive trip to the winner’s circle. She is being pointed towards the Fasig-Tipton La Troienne Stakes on the first Friday in May at Churchill Downs.

A stretch run for the ages was on display in last Tuesday’s Toyota Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland, the final major Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve prep race. Ian Wilkes-trained Burnham Square rallied from last to first, edging out East Avenue by a nose in a dramatic finish to the wire. Earnings from a share of the $1.25 million purse pushed Burnham Square into second in the 3-year-old division and fourth on the overall leaderboard with $927,325.

Along with the Blue Grass, last week Keeneland also hosted the final prep race on the Longines Kentucky Oaks trail – the Central Bank Ashland Stakes. La Cara, a daughter of Street Sense trained by Mark Casse, led every step of the way in the Ashland under Dylan Davis, winning by 1 ¼ lengths at odds of 9.08-1. Following her second win of the year, La Cara moved into 11th on the overall earnings list and eighth in the 3-year-old standings with $547,563 in earnings.

Steve Asmussen continues to lead the North America-based trainer standings and was one of four trainers last week to accrue more than $1 million in earnings. Asmussen had seven wins last week from 45 starts with his horses running 30% in the money and bankrolling $1,005,491. The Hall of Famer became the first trainer to surpass $8 million in 2025 earnings, and Asmussen enjoyed a family moment last Saturday at Oaklawn Park as he finished 1-2 in the Count Fleet Sprint Handicap with his sons riding both the winner (Booth, Erik Asmussen) and the runner-up (Ryvit, Keith Asmussen).
