An abundance of top-tier racing this past weekend at the Breeders’ Cup resulted in major changes among the 2024 Equibase earnings standings in several categories.

The mighty Sierra Leone had his day on Saturday, Nov. 2, winning the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar by a length and a half for over fellow 2024 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve alumni Fierceness and Forever Young. Following his win in the $7 million Classic, Sierra Leone moved up four spots to become the new leader by earnings in the 2024 Equibase standings. The Chad Brown trainee has earned $5,911,250 this year, highlighted by three graded stakes victories: the Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds, Toyota Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland and the Longines Classic.

Following his win in the Blue Grass, Sierra Leone had some heartbreaking losses but finished in the money in the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, Jim Dandy Stakes Presented by Mohegan Sun, and the DraftKings Travers Stakes. But, the son of Gun Runner prevailed on Saturday, winning the Classic “Where the Turf Meets the Surf” at Del Mar just like his sire Gun Runner did in 2017.

Thorpedo Anna, nicknamed “The Grizzly” by her trainer Kenny McPeek, romped to victory by 2 ½ lengths in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff with Brian Hernandez Jr. aboard, becoming just the fifth filly in history to win both the Longines Kentucky Oaks and the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. The Distaff was her sixth win of 2024, and it positions her currently third in the Equibase standings with $3,653,050 in earnings. Notably, Thorpedo Anna has five Grade 1 wins in 2024, and only her only loss was against the boys in the Travers Stakes when she finished second to Fierceness by a head.

Flavien Prat, the recipient of the 2024 Bill Shoemaker Award for outstanding jockey at the Breeders’ Cup, used a stellar weekend at that event to regain the lead in Equibase’s jockey standings over rival Irad Ortiz Jr. Prat rode four winners last week totaling $5,655,015 in earnings, highlighted by back-to-back Breeders’ Cup wins on Saturday, the Longines Classic on Sierra Leone and the Maker’s Mark Filly & Mare Turf aboard Moira. Overall, he is first in the standings with $34,085,891 in earnings, $3,702,724 ahead of Ortiz Jr. in second.

Sierra Leone’s trainer Chad Brown solidified his comfortable lead in the standings. From nine Breeders’ Cup starters last week, he had a win in the Longines Classic with Sierra Leone, a second-place finish in the Longines Distaff with Raging Sea and a third in the Big Ass Fans Dirt Mile with Domestic Product. Brown finished the week with three wins and $4,391,250 in earnings and now leads Steve Asmussen by $4,032,476 in earnings with the end of the year approaching.

Immersive, a Godolphin homebred trained by Brad Cox, extended her career record to 4-for-4 with incredible performance in the NetJets Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Nov. 1. She moved up 69 spots into the tenth-place position in the overall Equibase standings, and now leads the 2-year-old division with $1,622,700 in earnings. Of her four wins, three were in Grade 1 races: the Spinaway Stakes at Saratoga, Darley Alcibiades Stakes at Keeneland and the Juvenile Fillies at Del Mar. Immersive earned 30 points on the “Road to the Kentucky Oaks” with her win Friday, and now has 40 total qualifying points.

Another significant mover in the standings is Fierceness, a Repole Stable homebred who finished second in the Breeders’ Cup Classic following wins in the Jim Dandy Stakes and Travers Stakes. Despite missing the win last Saturday, Fierceness moved up six spots into fourth in the standings with $2,753,600 in earnings. After just one start in North America, Rebel’s Romance now sits fifth in the standings with $2,600,000 in earnings. The six-year-old son of Dubawi held on to win the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf by a neck to give trainer Charlie Appleby his third win in the Breeders’ Cup Turf in the last four years.

Citizen Bull shined bright on Breeders’ Cup Future Stars Friday Nov. 1, winning the FanDuel Juvenile Presented by TAA by a length and a half at odds of 15.90-1 for trainer Bob Baffert with Martin Garcia in the saddle. This Breeders’ Cup victory moved Citizen Bull into 18th in the earnings standings and second in the 2-year-old division. The son of Into Mischief earned 30 points on the “Road to the Kentucky Derby” from his win in the Juvenile, adding to10 points earned from his win in the American Pharoah Stakes Presented by DK Horse at Santa Anita Park.

Moira’s victory in the Filly & Mare Turf gave trainer Kevin Attard his first Breeders’ Cup win. The 2022 Canadian Horse of the Year surged up 76 spots in the standings to 13th following her win on Saturday; she now has two wins and two seconds from four graded stakes starts this year with $1,582,018 in earnings. Notably, Moira became just the seventh Canadian-bred horse in history to win a Breeders’ Cup race.
