Raging Sea

Raging Sea won her career debut in a 2-year-old maiden race going seven furlongs at Saratoga on Aug. 7, 2022. She came out of that race to go directly into the Grade 1 Alcibiades at Keeneland on Oct. 7. In the Alcibiades, she raced close-up throughout, zig-zagged between horses in the stretch, and ran on to finish third by a neck but was disqualified and placed fourth.

Raging Sea made her next start in the Grade 1 $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Keeneland, where she drew post 13 in a 13-horse field. Despite the post position, Raging Sea ran a solid effort to place third in the Breeders’ Cup, beaten a total of four lengths.

Raging Sea returned during the second half of 2023 for a truncated 3-year-old season, but she made the best of limited starts toward the end of the year. She won a 1 1/8-mile allowance race at Keeneland on Oct. 20 amd then added a graded stakes win on Nov. 25 in the Grade 3 $200,000 Comely Stakes going 1 1/8 miles on the main track at Aqueduct. Raging Sea came from off the pace in the six-horse field of 3-year-old fillies to win by a nose.

The Curlin filly made her 4-year-old debut in the $300,000 Baird Doubledogdare Stakes April 19 at Keeneland, where she dominanted the opposition in a 3 1/4-length romp under Flavien Prat.

Raging Sea made her second start in 2024 in the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps Stakes and tired late to finish fourth, 4 ¾ lengths behind winner Randomized. She regained her winning form in her next race, opening a clear lead in the stretch of the Grade 2 Shuvee Stakes July 21 at Saratoga and powering to a 2 ½-length score.

That win set Raging Sea up for another try at defeating Randomized and Idiomatic on Aug. 23 in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign Stakes back at Saratoga. Flavien Prat kept his filly well back of that pair as they set a contested pace through the backstretch in the 1 1/8-mile race, and began to urge Raging Sea into contention through the far turn as champion Idiomatic shook off Randomized and drew clear. Raging Sea closed relentlessly through the stretch and caught a tiring Idiomatic in the final strides to prevail by a head and secure her first top-level victory.

In her next start and final prep for the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff, Raging Sea bobbled at the break of the 1 1/8-mile Beldame Stakes Oct. 6 at Belmont at the Big A and settled off the pace through the backstretch before commencing a rally to take the lead in early stretch. The 1-9 favorite outbattled longshot Batcuada to win by a head, her fourth in five 2024 starts.

Subsequenly in her next start in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Distaff, Raging Sea chased the 2-5 favorite Thorpedo Anna and settled for second in a seven-horse field going 1 1/8 miles on Nov. 2 at Del Mar.

Raging Sea returned from a six-month layoff in the $1 million Fasig-Tipton La Troienne Stakes May 2 on the Longines Kentucky Oaks undercard. In a rematch with Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner Thorpedo Anna, Raging Sea turned the tables on her familiar foe and finished powerfully to prevail by three-quarters of a length for her second career Grade 1 win.

Raging Sea subsequently finished a distant third in the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps Stakes Presented by Ford on a sloppy track June 6 at Saratoga Race Course.

Raging Sea is trained by Chad Brown. She was bred in Kentucky out of the mare Stormy Welcome by Storm Cat and hails from the family of breed-shaping sire A.P. Indy and 1990 Preakness Stakes winner Summer Squall.
