Before we talk about who is in the race, let’s talk about who is not in the race. The connections of impressive Grade 1 Champagne Stakes winner U. S. S. Valor have chosen to bypass the Juvenile and instead focus their efforts squarely on next year’s Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve. Without U. S. S. Valor in the Juvenile, the race went from being an anticipated East versus West showdown to a race with a single prohibitive favorite, the Bob Baffert-trained California invader #5 Hughes, who is coming off a dominant six-length runaway win in Santa Anita Park’s Grade 1 American Pharoah Stakes Presented by DK Horse to improve his record to 4-for-4 to begin his career. Baffert has won the Juvenile a record six times including wins in two of the last five runnings with Citizen Bull in 2024 and Corniche in 2021. Hughes stretched out to a route in the American Pharoah and not only handled the added distance but improved and ran his career-best race so far. He will offer low odds on the tote board but there’s no way to get around it, Hughes is the horse to beat.

Along with Baffert, the other trainer that has dominated recent runnings of the Juvenile is Todd Pletcher, who has won the race three of the last five years with standout horses such as Ted Noffey in 2025, Fierceness in 2023, and Forte in 2022. Pletcher will send out the top challenger to Hughes with #6 American History, who has begun his career with two straight wins including a victory in the local prep at Keeneland at this distance in the Grade 1 Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity by a length over #7 Coach Pope where American History was able to overcome a bad start and still was able to win.

Given a better start, American History should be more or less in the same position as Hughes as the pair stalks up close to the pace, which is likely to be set by the trio of Coach Pope, #2 Gaudreau, and #8 He Is No Lie. Of that leading threesome, the horse with the best chance to survive and make a bid to hold off Hughes and American History will be Gaudreau, who exits a loss to the aforementioned U. S. S. Valor in the Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park but had out-sprinted Coach Pope for his maiden win in the first career start for both horses back on Aug. 8 at Saratoga. Gaudreau’s trainer Chad Brown won the Juvenile with Good Magic in 2017 and could be able to get enough out of Gaudreau at 1 1/16 miles to gut-out an in-the-money finish.

The wild card in the field will be Baffert’s “other” horse, #3 Salahudin, who has begun his career on a three-race winning streak so far including the $250,000 Ellis Park Juvenile at seven furlongs and the Grade 3 Iroquois Stakes going 1 1/16 miles at Churchill Downs where he rallied from sixth in a seven-horse field to catch the speedy He Is No Lie for the win by a half-length. Baffert has called Salahudin a “big baby” who is still learning, and that’s a potentially scary prospect if the undefeated horse suddenly figures it all out in the Juvenile Friday at Keeneland.

The wagering strategy for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile will be to bet favored #5 Hughes on top in trifectas over the trio of #2 Gaudreau, #3 Salahudin, and #6 American History. We can also back-up our trifectas by hedging Hughes in exacta boxes along with American History:

Wagering Strategy on a $20 Budget:

$4 exacta box: 5,6 ($8)

What to say at the betting window: Keeneland, race 9, $4 exacta box 5,6

$2 trifecta key: 5 over 2,3,6 ($12)

What to say at the betting window: Keeneland, race 9, $2 trifecta key, 5 over 2,3,6

Good luck and enjoy the race!
