Del Mar History: Dare and Go Upsets Cigar in the Pacific Classic
Three-year-olds take the spotlight on the biggest day of racing at Century Mile in Edmonton, Alberta, Saturday evening with a competitive field entered in the $200,000 Grade 3 Canadian Derby. The Canadian Derby anchors a card featuring three other stakes races and its distance of 1 ¼ miles will be a test of stamina for the entrants, as all but one have not raced this far before.
On Thursday, Aug. 19, America’s Best Racing hosts “Canadian Derby Preview Live” featuring analysis of and betting insights into the race. The livestream, hosted by ABR’s Alexa Zepp, Century Mile’s Jentry van Baal, and handicapper J.D. Fox, streams on our Facebook, X, and YouTube channels starting at 8 p.m. ET.
The Canadian Derby will be televised live by FanDuel TV and has a scheduled post time of 10:30 p.m. ET Saturday.
1. Helioo (15-1 morning-line odds): He’s competed against several of these in four races earlier races this spring/summer at Century Mile and in his only two-turn race he tired to finish fifth of eight starters after stalking the pace on July 24 in the 1 1/16-mile Count Lathum Stakes. Would be a surprise.
JOCKEY: Amadeo Perez; TRAINER: Mel Snow
2. Debrusk (20-1): Moved from Hastings Racecourse and in his only two-turn race at this track was no threat when finishing seventh of eight starters in the Count Lathum. Pass.
JOCKEY: Silvino Morales; TRAINER: Dino Condilenios
3. Kamal (30-1): Like the two horses drawn to his inside, he’s primarily a sprinter who did not show much when stretched out, finishing last of eight and 20 lengths behind Tisum in the Count Lathum.
JOCKEY: Alexander Marti; TRAINER: James Brown
4. Quarry (9-2): Raced in Kentucky until the middle of July and in two races since moving north he’s finished third in an allowance race and then second by a nose to Western Warrior at 27-1 odds in the 1 1/8-mile Manitoba Derby, both at Assiniboia Downs. Has hit the board in nine of 14 starts and should be used in exotic bets.
JOCKEY: Damario Bynoe; TRAINER: Jerry Gourneau
5. Magicstrikesagain (20-1): Made four starts in the U.S. with a win going one mile at Churchill Downs back in June before moving to this circuit, where he finished second in a route allowance before being disqualified to ninth for bumping a rival. Had a good speed figure in that race and merits consideration as an upset candidate for a hot jockey-trainer combo – if he runs, that is. These connections also have Tisum entered.
JOCKEY: Jose Asencio; TRAINER: David Nicholson
6. Direct Strike (12-1): Another recent shipper from Kentucky who in his first start in Canada made up some ground late to nab fourth in the Manitoba Derby at Assiniboia Downs behind three horses he’ll face again in this spot. Well-bred and was an expensive yearling purchase, and he is the only runner in this field that’s competed at a mile and a quarter, finishing second by a half-length at Churchill Downs back in April. Not without a chance.
JOCKEY: N’Rico Prescod; TRAINER: Craig Robert Smith
7. Really Ralis (4-1): British Columbia-bred started his career with two wins in three starts sprinting and then won the one-mile Derby Trial Stakes at Assiniboia convincingly before racing an even fifth in the Manitoba Derby at that track. Fits in with this group but might be overbet.
JOCKEY: Kerron Khelawan; TRAINER: Cindy Krasner

8. Big Curl (10-1): Was favored at 7-5 post-time odds in the 1 1/16-mile Count Lathum on this track July 24 and lost to Tisum by a nose after a heated stretch battle. Has the breeding to handle an extra furlong, but 10-1 morning-line odds for both him and Tisum indicate the field he’ll face in this spot is much tougher.
JOCKEY: Enrique Gonzalez; TRAINER: Tim Rycroft
9. Gethsemane (8-1): Made seven starts in the U.S. on four different circuits – Louisiana, Arkansas, Kentucky, and New York – and held his own against solid competition before moving to Canada and finishing third behind Western Warrior and Quarry in the Manitoba Derby. Will need to improve to upset this race, and it’s not out of the question.
JOCKEY: Antonio Whitehall; TRAINER: Monique Goulet
10. Tisum (10-1): Enters off of a game nose win in the Count Lathum Stakes here over Big Curl and will be stepping up in class Saturday. That win was his first in Canada after 10 starts in the U.S., mainly in claiming races. His connections are also represented by Magicstrikesagain, so one of those two will scratch. This gelding has the better shot for an upset.
JOCKEY: Jose Ascensio; TRAINER: David Nicholson
11. Javier (20-1): Set a pressured pace in the 1 1/16-mile Count Lathum and faded in the stretch to finish fourth. Figures to be part of the pace in this spot – possibly leading if he breaks well from an outside post – but it’s hard to see him still in the mix late.
JOCKEY: Brian Boodramsingh; TRAINER: Carson Frey
12. Western Warrior (7-2): Showed little in his first four career starts in Kentucky but, after being gelded to start off 2026, he won three of five races at Oaklawn Park by open lengths and around two turns. He then was moved to Canada and taken over by his current connections last time and outfought Quarry for a game nose win in the Manitoba Derby. Deserves favoritism but will need to navigate a clean trip from an outside post to win, something he did accomplish twice at Oaklawn.
JOCKEY: Dane Nelson; TRAINER: Dino Condilenios
13. Need the Purse (also eligible, 15-1): Will need a defection to get in, and if he does he will need to improve off of his Canadian debut last time which resulted in a third in the Count Lathum. Should be a pace presence if he gets in, and his trainer has won this race five times.
JOCKEY: Kimal Santo; TRAINER: Robertino Diodoro
