The $300,000 Grade 3 Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Handicap is one of the highlights of Iowa Derby Day Saturday at Prairie Meadows, a card that features four stakes races. The Cornhusker, a 1 1/8-mile race on dirt for 3-year-olds and older, drew a competitive field of nine that includes last year’s winner, Cornishman, and runner-up, Heroic Move. Notable winners of the Cornhusker include Black Tie Affair (1991), Roses in May (2004), Fort Larned (2012), and Knicks Go (2021). This year’s edition of the Cornhusker brings together five graded stakes winners with a class rating of 107, which makes for a stellar betting race.

Here’s a look at the field from the rail out:

Bullard, a 4-year-old Gun Runner colt trained by Michael McCarthy, ships in from Churchill Downs as he seeks his first win since the Grade 3 Bob Hope Stakes at Del Mar in November 2024. His jockey, Kazushi Kimura, will be riding at Prairie Meadows this weekend for the first time. Render Judgment, a 4-year-old colt by Blame who competed in the 2025 Kentucky Derby, is fresh off an allowance win at Churchill Downs at 1 3/16 miles June 13 for trainer Kenny McPeek with Emmanuel Esquivel remaining aboard. Heroic Move, a 6-year-old son of Quality Road, finished second by a neck in the 2025 Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Handicap for trainer Robertino Diodoro. Last time out, Heroic Move won the Grade 3 Steve Sexton Mile by 1 ½ lengths at Lone Star Park, earning a career- and field-best 116 Equibase Speed Figure. Ramon Vazquez, who has two wins aboard Heroic Move, will be in the irons. Last year’s 2025 Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Handicap winner Cornishman is going for his third straight stakes win for trainer Dan McFarlane, who is winning at 33% so far at the Prairie Meadows meet. The 5-year-old Curlin gelding will have Elvin Gonzalez back aboard. San Siro ships in from Churchill for trainer Brendan Walsh, who will saddle his third career starter at Prairie Meadows. A 5-year-old Classic Empire gelding, San Siro comes into the race following three straight third-place finishes at the Grade 3 level and will be paired with jockey Florent Geroux for the first time. Gigante, a 6-year-old by Not This Time, ships in from Lone Star Park for trainer Steve Asmussen and will have Hall of Fame rider Mike Smith aboard for the first time. Gigante finished third in the Texas Turf Classic Stakes June 27 and will be switching back to the dirt. Spellmaker broke his maiden last time out in a $100,000 maiden claiming race at Churchill Downs on June 4 for trainer Heather Irion. Regular rider Reynier Arrieta is scheduled to ride the 4-year-old Gun Runner colt. Navajo Warrior, the 5-2 morning-line favorite, is fresh off a front-running victory in the Grade 3 Pimlico Special Stakes May 15 at Laurel Park on Preakness day. He was scratched from the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Stakes in favor of this race. Micah Husbands will ride Navajo Warrior for the first time and makes his Prairie Meadows debut, while trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. is a career 5-for-6 in the money at this track, including a win in the 2022 Cornhusker Handicap with Officiating. Spenard, McFarlane’s second entrant, rounds out the field. He romped by 7 ¼ lengths in an allowance-optional claiming race at Prairie Meadows June 19.

Analysis and Main Contenders:

Gigante (Ben Breland/Eclipse Sportswire)

At 8-1 odds on the morning line, Gigante provides a ton of value for an eight-time stakes winner with more than $1.4 million in lifetime earnings. The Cornhusker will be Gigante’s 37th career start and 15th at the graded stakes level. While most of his wins came on the turf, Gigante has four wins and a third on dirt, including two stakes wins at 1 1/16 miles. All four of his wins on the dirt came when he was switching back after a race on grass, which is the exact situation for Gigante in the Cornhusker coming out of the Texas Turf Classic Stakes. Asmussen has also been effective with this move, winning at 20% over the last two years from 298 starts with horses going from turf to dirt in all races. Gigante is a sustained runner through and through on the turf, usually making a large sweeping late move, however, his wins on dirt were a different story as he has raced much closer to the pace in those races on the main track. Gigante is tied for first in this race by average class with a 109 and has taken more trips to the winner’s circle than any other contender in this field. Meaningfully, Gigante will be coming off just a 14-day layoff, something that Asmussen rarely does in graded stakes. He could benefit from the short layoff, however, as he was successful earlier in 2026 when winning an allowance at Sam Houston off a two-week break. One of the most intriguing things about Gigante is Smith traveling from California to hop aboard for the first time. Smith has just 83 mounts so far in 2026 and it says a lot for the Hall of Famer to make the trip for this horse. Over the past year, Smith wins at 19% first time riding in graded stakes with a tremendous 141% return on investment. Gigante has a great opportunity to outrun his odds in this spot given his class, ability on dirt, and top-tier connections.

Navajo Warrior is a gelding by Candy Ride who has seemingly gotten better with age. He was winless in his first five starts in 2024, but the following year at age 4 he fired off five consecutive wins. As a 5-year-old in 2026 for Joseph, Navajo Warrior has two victories and a third from three starts, winning by 1 ½ lengths over Gosger in an allowance-optional claiming race at Gulfstream Park in March and the Pimlico Special Stakes by 2 ¾ lengths last time out in his first try at the graded stakes level. Navajo Warrior led from start to finish in the Pimlico Special, but he has shown the ability to press the pace and win. With an outside post, it is an advantage that he does not need the lead to win with a fair amount of early speed on his inside. The Cornhusker is a sixteenth of a mile longer than his last race, but in the Pimlico Special Navajo Warrior was able to repel bids from fellow rivals around the far turn while drawing clear at the end with plenty left in the tank. Over the past two years, Joseph wins at 33% from 33 starts in Grade 3 races with horses who won last time out. Navajo Warrior is a formidable contender and could very well best this field, however at 5-2 on the morning line there is better value in this race.

Cornishman (Coady Media)

There are a lot of similarities between Cornishman and Heroic Move. Both have run in many of the same races, they are ranked first and second in late pace rating in this field, they finished first and second, respectively, in last year’s edition of the Cornhusker. Cornishman gets the slight edge in this spot given his affinity for Prairie Meadows. Cornishman has two wins and a second from three starts on the Prairie Meadows main track, including a win last time out in the Jim and Sandra Rasmussen Stakes, a race in which he finished second in 2025 before going on to win the Cornhusker. Trainer McFarlane and jockey Gonzalez are no strangers to the winner’s circle at this track and win at 30% over the last three years in all races together at Prairie Meadows. Cornishman is having a terrific 5-year-old campaign as well with three wins and two seconds from six starts. It would be tough for Cornishman to again upset in the Cornhusker, however he seems to be in even better form than he was at this time last year and poses a threat to the favorites.

The rest of the field (with best Equibase Speed Figure in a similar race): Bullard (99), Render Judgment (100), Heroic Move (116), San Siro (106), Spellmaker (87), and Spenard (101).
