An active weekend in North American Thoroughbred racing led to changes in several divisions on Equibase’s leaderboard for 2026 earnings, in particular the older male division, 3-year-old divisions for both males and females, and trainers. Currently, three of the top trainers in the business – Brad Cox, Saffie Joseph Jr., and Steve Asmusen – are separated by just $82,957 in total earnings for the year.

At Tampa Bay Downs, The Puma rallied from last at the first point of call to win his first career race in a Grade 3 stakes, taking the ESMARK Tampa Bay Derby and picking up 50 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve. The Gustavo Delgado trainee moved into sixth in the 3-year-old male division and 16th overall among Thoroughbred racehorses with $244,280 in 2026 earnings. After adding 50 points to the six points he earned when third in the Sam F. Davis Stakes, The Puma is now ranked second on Churchill Downs’ Kentucky Derby leaderboard with 56 total points.

In the other Derby points prep, Potente won Santa Anita Park’s San Felipe Stakes Presented by DK Horse with a late rally under Juan Hernandez to extend his unbeaten record to 2-for-2. Now with $162,000 in earnings, Potente moved into 13th in the sophomore male division and 37th overall. The Bob Baffert trainee earned 50 Kentucky Derby points for his San Felipe win and moved into seventh on Churchill Downs’ leaderboard.

There was just one Longines Kentucky Oaks prep last weekend, the Santa Ysabel Stakes Sunday at Santa Anita. Forced Entry, a Charlatan filly, finished strong to post a 1 ¾ length victory in the Santa Ysabel for Baffert and Hernandez. Forced Entry is now 2-for-2 in her career the dirt including a 7 ¼ length maiden victory in February. With $102,500 in earnings and 50 Oaks points, Forced Entry moved into 21st in the 3-year-old filly division and her 50 points earned now place her fifth on the Kentucky Oaks leaderboard.

British Isles (Eclipse Sportswire)

The marquee race for older horses last weekend was the Santa Anita Handicap Presented by Yaamava’ Resort & Casino at San Miguel. British Isles, a 5-year-old gelding by Justify, drew clear to win the Grade 1 “Big ‘Cap” by 4 ½ lengths for his first career victory on dirt. British Isles started the year with a fifth-place finish in the Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes at Gulfstream Park before posting his first stakes win in the Big ‘Cap, which also gave jockey Diego Herrera his first career Grade 1. With $264,300 in 2026 earnings, British Isles is now ranked sixth among older males and 15th on the overall leaderboard.

After a thrilling weekend of racing, Brad Cox moved up one spot and now leads the North American trainer earnings standings, with Saffie Joseph Jr. in second and Steve Asmussen remaining in third, with less than $83,000 separating the top trio.

Cox recorded five wins and $482,111 in earnings last week, pushing his 2026 total to $4,491,879. Asmussen led all trainers in weekly earnings with $496,514 but remains third overall with $4,408,922 for the year.

Joseph Jr. made the most of a lighter schedule, sending out just 11 starters, less than half of Cox’s total and 39 fewer than Asmussen, but still posted six wins (55%) while finishing 73% in the money. He closed the week with $337,447 in earnings and now sits second with $4,411,690, just $2,768 ahead of Asmussen.

Tyler Gaffalione and Irad Ortiz Jr. remain first and second, respectively, among North American jockeys, with Gaffalione leading the standings with $4,654,702 in 2026 earnings and Ortiz Jr. close behind with $3,976,126 following last week’s action. Flavien Prat continues his steady climb up the leaderboard, moving up two spots into third after posting six wins (27%) and $451,834 in earnings last week.
