All-weather runners will get a highly useful prep for the March 21 Jeff Ruby Steaks and pick up some Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve qualifying points in the process through Saturday’s John Battaglia Memorial Stakes at Turfway Park. The Battaglia, held on Turfway’s Tapeta Footings track, attracted an overflow field of 13 and will award the top five finishers 20-10-6-4-2 points toward a start in the first jewel in the Triple Crown. The race will be broadcast live on FanDuel TV.

john battaglia memorial Stakes

Racetrack: Turfway Park, Florence, Ky.

Date: Feb. 21

Purse: $175,000

Distance: 1 1/16 miles

Race: 9

Post Time: 9:55 p.m. ET

Notable winners: Tiz the Bomb (2022), Somelikeithotbrown (2019), Request for Parole (2002).

First held: 1982

1. Street Beast: Made a smooth transition from turf to Tapeta by winning the Leonatus Stakes here in front-running style. With his speed and the rail, he will be tough to catch.

JOCKEY: Luan Machado; TRAINER: Ben Colebrook

2. Steel Imperium: Rallied nicely to win his debut at six furlongs. Has to stretchout to two turns here but being a son of Belmont Stakes winner Essential Quality bodes well for that.

JOCKEY: Dylan Machado; TRAINER: Caio Caramori

3. Maximus Prime: Has late speed but is a maiden after seven tries and seems overmatched here.

JOCKEY: Walter Rodriguez; TRAINER: Anthony Mitchell

4. Kilo Tango: Looked good in his Tapeta debut, rallying from fifth at the eighth pole to win at a mile. Continued improvement makes him a threat.

JOCKEY: Fernando De La Cruz; TRAINER: Brad Cox

5. Baytown Dreamer: Ran a big race when third in the Smarty Jones Stakes at 84.30-1 then fizzled in the tougher Southwest Stakes. Has turf experience but is an afterthought here on Tapeta.

JOCKEY: Orlando Bocachica; TRAINER: Paul McEntee

6. Time for Money: Was fourth as the favorite in his first try on Tapeta in slow time. Others offer more appeal.

JOCKEY: Danny Sheehy; TRAINER: John Ennis

Attfield (Adam Coglianese/NYRA)

7. Attfield: This will be his first start on Tapeta but he is Grade 3-placed on turf and should be a factor if he transfers that form.

JOCKEY: Ricardo Santana Jr.;  TRAINER: Thomas Morley

8. Great White: Won his debut here and then failed to menace in the Leonatus Stakes while finishing fifth. A step forward would make him a threat for the exotics.

JOCKEY: Alex Achard; TRAINER: John Ennis

9. Stop the Car: Won his first two starts, then finished seventh in the Lecomte Stakes in his stakes debut. Tries Tapeta for the first time. Could be worth a look if the price is right.

JOCKEY: Edgar Morales; TRAINER: Brendan Walsh

10. Aces Honor: Races on Tapeta for the first time. Won a turf stakes at Sam Houston Race Park last time out. Certainly has the potential to be a factor here.

JOCKEY: Victor Carrasco;  TRAINER: Ethan West

11. Fulleffort: Rallied for second in the Leonatus as the 6-5 favorite. Should like the added distance but the post could be problematic.

JOCKEY: Vincent Cheminaud; TRAINER: Brad Cox

12. Two Out Hero: Had a rough trip when third in a Grade 1 turf stakes at Woodbine. Won on Tapeta there in his career debut by 12 lengths. The post is a concern, but he hasn’t raced since September and should show enough speed out of the gate to get a good position.

JOCKEY: Rafael Hernandez; TRAINER: Kevin Attard

13. Small Town: Will need a scratch to run after winning his career debut here. Though the time was good, it was only at six furlongs and the post and a lack of experience could come back to haunt him.

JOCKEY: Walter Rodriguez; TRAINER: Michael McCarthy

THE PICK: Two Out Hero

LIVE LONGSHOT: Aces Honor
