Equibase Standings: Irad Ortiz Jr. Closes Earnings Gap with 15-Win Week
Racing
The big mover in Equibase’s rankings of earnings for North America-based racehorses, trainers, and jockeys last week was Irad Ortiz Jr. The five-time Eclipse Award-winning jockey delivered a dominant week, more than doubling any competitor’s win total, and pushed his 2025 earnings past $36.7 million.
Ortiz remains in second among all North America-based jockeys in earnings behind Flavien Prat but has narrowed the gap to $159,633. Ortiz Jr. finished the week with an incredible 15 wins, scoring at a 35% clip and finishing in the top three 72% of the time from 43 mounts, with a total earnings bankroll of $1,096,466. He had a five-win day on Wednesday, Nov. 12 at Churchill Downs, including aboard inspirational rescue horse Awesome Hawaiian, and went on to win multiple races every day for the rest of the week.
As for horses, the Jockey Club Oaks Nov. 15 at Aqueduct featured a rematch between graded stakes winners Fionn and Laurelin, who both previously raced in the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes Presented by Dixiana at Keeneland in October. The pair did not disappoint in the Oaks, finishing first and second, respectively, in a thrilling stretch run on turf. Fionn, a 3-year-old Twirling Candy filly, had three straight graded stakes victories this year prior to her fourth-place finish in the Queen Elizabeth II and added her fourth victory at the graded level in the Jockey Club Oaks. This was Fionn’s sixth win of the year from eight starts, all in stakes races. Now with $1,968,970 in earnings this year, Fionn has moved into second in the 3-year-old filly division and climbed three spots in the overall standings for racehorses into seventh.
Another standout 3-year-old filly this weekend was Shred the Gnar, who won the Chilukki Stakes Presented by Resolute Racing Nov. 15 at Churchill Downs in her first start off a 197-day layoff. She led from start to finish and prevailed by 2 ¾ lengths for trainer Brian Lynch, who won at an impressive 36% clip last week. Shred the Gnar entered the Chilukki off two dominant victories by a combined winning margin of 13 ½ lengths, and with this third straight win, her combined win margin now rises to 15 ¼ lengths. Shred the Gnar has three wins and a second from four starts this year and $312,410 in earnings, which moved her into 36th in the 3-year-old division.
There were no changes in the top 10 trainers by earnings last week in North America, with Brad Cox still maintaining a solid lead over Chad Brown.
