The dust has settled on the biggest day of the year at Parx Racing, which featured four graded stakes races including the $1 million Cotillion Stakes and $1 million Pennsylvania Derby.

Baeza put on a brilliant performance Sept. 20 at Parx, winning the Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby by 2 ¼ lengths for jockey Hector Berrios’ one and only mount of the week. Since breaking his maiden by 4 ¾ lengths in February this year at Santa Anita, Baeza finished second to Journalism in the Santa Anita Derby and third in both the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve and Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets behind the formidable duo of Sovereignty and Journalism. Prior to his win on Saturday, the McKinzie colt finished second to Sovereignty by one length in the Jim Dandy Stakes Presented by Mohegan Sun in late July at Saratoga Race Course.

The stage was finally set at Parx for Baeza to secure a graded stakes victory, and he did so in style for trainer John Shirreffs, pulling away to become the third Grade 1 winner out of his dam (mother), Puca. After facing elite competition throughout his 3-year-old campaign, Baeza is now a Grade 1 winner and a millionaire, rocketing up 19 spots on the Equibase Leaderboard to 11th in the overall standings and fourth in the 3-year-old male division with $1,503,000 in 2025 earnings. Notably, Baeza earned a 116 Equibase Speed Figure for his Pennsylvania Derby win, the highest figure earned by any horse across North America last week.

In the race prior to the Pennsylvania Derby, the Cotillion Stakes featured 3-year-old filly division standouts La Cara, Good Cheer, and Scottish Lassie in a rematch of the Grade 1 DK Horse Acorn Stakes. Scottish Lassie and Longines Kentucky Oaks winner Good Cheer went off at odds of 8-5 and 1.70-1, respectively, while La Cara was the 9.70-1 fifth betting choice, however none of the three finished in the top three. Clicquot, a 3-year-old Quality Road filly for trainer Brendan Walsh, took home the lion’s share of the $1 million purse, edging Dry Powder by a neck.

The Cotillion was Clicquot’s second consecutive graded stakes victory following a four-length win in the Grade 3 Daily Racing Form Indiana Oaks in July and her fourth consecutive win overall. She earned a career-best 107 Equibase Speed Figure for the Cotillion victory and climbed into the top 50, now 37th on the overall Equibase Leaderboard and sixth in the 3-year-old filly division with $840,153 in earnings.

Disco Time kept his undefeated record intact Friday at Fairmount Park, leading from starts to finish for a commanding 5 ½-length win in the St. Louis Derby Presented by FanDuel Sportsbook with Florent Geroux aboard. The race marked his first start since rallying late to capture the Grade 3 Lecomte Stakes at Fair Grounds in January, but the nine-month layoff proved no obstacle as the Brad Cox trainee won for the fourth time in as many starts.

Flavien Prat remains on top of the leaderboard for the 14th straight week with $29,592,597 in earnings, nearly $2 million ahead of Irad Ortiz Jr., who topped all jockeys last week by earnings with $1,079,076. The top four jockeys remain unchanged, however Manny Franco moved up one spot into fifth over the weekend following a lucrative week of riding, posting eight wins (30%) and nearly a half-million in earnings.

Saffie Joseph Jr. moved up one spot into sixth place in the trainer standings but that was the only change among the top 10 by purse earnings. Brendan Walsh, ninth on the overall leaderboard, topped all trainers last week with $780,522 in earnings.

  • Last week’s top trainer by earnings — Brendan Walsh: 3 wins, $780,522
  • Last week’s top jockey by earnings — Irad Ortiz Jr: 6 wins, $1,079,076
  • Last week’s top Equibase Speed Figure — Baeza (116)
