As the self-proclaimed “Horse Capital of the World,” Lexington has planned a series of events that promote the Breeders’ Cup, Keeneland Race Course, and also the city’s unique food, music, and culture.
Read on for a guide to Breeders’ Cup Festival Week, which starts Sunday, Oct. 25, and ends on Saturday, Oct. 31, also known, of course, as Halloween!
Sunday, Oct. 25

In August 2025, Gatton Park on the Town Branch opened in downtown Lexington, adjacent to Rupp Arena and the remodeled Lexington Civic Center. The state-of-the art park has been a hit among Lexingtonians, and it serves as the site of Breeders’ Cup’s kickoff “Purple in the Park” from 1-6 p.m. ET. The family-friendly event will feature meet-and-greet opportunities with horses, face painting for kids and those young at heart, food trucks, and live music.
Gatton Park is one of several developments that have energized the city over the past 10-15 years. It’s sandwiched between the convention center and arena and the happening Distillery District on Manchester Street, featuring brewpubs, restaurants, the Manchester Hotel, and concert venues. Now, yet another entertainment district is starting to come to life just a mile or so west of Gatton Park and a few blocks north of the Distillery District. The Commons spans 42 acres and once completed will have more live music, food and drink spots, and outdoor spaces. It’s worth a visit during Breeders’ Cup week to see what’s already open – including the OBC Kitchen restaurant – and what’s coming soon.
Monday, Oct. 26

Starting Monday and ending Thursday, fans can enjoy a truly memorable experience – Keeneland Race Course during its morning hours – at “Sunrise Trackside: Breeders’ Cup Edition.” From 7-10 a.m., spectators can watch Breeders’ Cup contenders put in their final morning workouts for the World Championships, with coffee and light breakfast meals available for purchase. “Sunrise: Trackside” is free to attend – dress warm!
Entries for 14 races comprising the 43rd Breeders’ Cup will be revealed at the Rood & Riddle Post Position Draw held at the Keeneland Sales Pavilion from 5-7 p.m. Attendance is free but tickets must be reserved in advance – get them here.
Some top-line blues musicians will perform Monday evening at the historic Lyric Theatre, headlined by Lexington’s own Tee Dee Young. Young, a member of the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame, has been entertaining audiences here and around the world for decades with his guitar mastery. He’ll be joined by Texas blues-rock guitarist Ally Venable and vocalist Patricia Mathis for what’s dubbed “Purple & Blues Monday.” Get ticket information here.
Tuesday, Oct. 27
The Race Track Chaplaincy of America (RTCA) will host a “Night of Faith, Hope, and Love” fundraising dinner at Keeneland’s Club Lawn Chalet with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6 p.m. The RTCA, headquartered in Lexington, is a interdenominational nonprofit network serving people in all sectors of the horse industry in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. This event is held every year during Breeders’ Cup week and includes awards presentations and a guest speaker. Get ticket information here.
Wednesday, Oct. 28
In 2022, Breeders’ Cup orchestrated a “Tandy Park Takeover” in downtown Lexington, holding a music, food, and arts festival with Breeders’ Cup merch at the open-air pavilion and surrounding space next to the old courthouse. The takeover is back for 2026 and will be held each day from Wednesday through Friday, Oct. 30. Musical acts include a fine country/rockabilly act, the Ranahans, on Wednesday, and 1980s Lexington club scene stars Velvet Elvis on Thursday. It’s free to attend, of course.
For those interested in mixing hoops and horses Breeders’ Cup week, head a couple of blocks south from Tandy Park and watch the University of Kentucky Wildcat men’s basketball team play an exhibition game against the University of Central Florida at Rupp Arena. The tuneup for Mark Pope’s squad comes two days before the men’s hoops coach will be at Keeneland to watch a 2-year-old colt named after him run in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Tipoff is at 6 p.m. – ticket info here.
Thursday, Oct. 29

Activity in Lexington really heats up with another “Tandy Park Takeover” followed by some exciting evening events.
From 5-8 p.m. at the 325 West Main building downtown (intersection of Main and Broadway), fans of 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Zenyatta will be thrilled to attend a preview of “Zenyatta: Treasures of a Queen” exhibition and auction that is scheduled to be held in December at Lexington’s Cross Gate Gallery. Guest speaker Dottie Ingordo-Shirreffs, wife of Zenyatta’s late trainer John Shirreffs, will share stories of Zenyatta’s reign on the racetrack during the late 2000s before her 19-race winning streak came to an end in the 2010 Classic and also discuss the memorabilia to be auctioned in December. The first 100 fans attending will receive a complimentary Zenyatta poster.
If the weather is good Thursday night, then head to one of Lexington’s best concert venues, The Burl in the Distillery District, for a free outdoor show that’s sure to summon “party like it’s 1999” vibes. “Purple Rein at The Burl” features a performance from the Prince tribute band The Purple xPeRIeNCE, formed in 2011 by Minneapolis native and frontman Marshall Charloff. Grounds at The Burl will be draped in purple, the signature color of both the late musical icon and the Breeders’ Cup. The concert is free to attend – and fans can register here for free Breeders’ Cup tickets given away during the show (must be present to win).
(Tribute-band fans can come right back to The Burl on Friday evening for Back 2 Mac, a top-rate Fleetwood Mac revival. Ticket info here.)

In addition to the final “Tandy Park Takeover,” the Lexington powers-that-be made a very fan-friendly decision for this year’s Breeders’ Cup by announcing that both the Future Stars Friday races and Championship Saturday races will be available for free outdoor viewing at Gatton Park. The 2026 “Breeders’ Cup Watch Party” runs from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. both days and fans are encouraged to bring blankets and fold-out chairs to watch all of the races on a giant LED screen. Expert handicappers will be on hand to offer picks for upcoming races during the downtime, so have your mobile betting account set up and with funds available if you’re planning to attend. If the weather cooperates, this promises to be the best place to watch the Breeders’ Cup short of being at Keeneland.
Following the Future Stars Friday card at Keeneland, the “Bash at the Breeders’ Cup” party will commence from 6-9 p.m. at the Manchester Reserve in the Distillery District. The party will feature food, cocktails, live music from popular area cover band Superfecta, and exclusive auction items. Proceeds benefit the Thoroughbred Charities of America. Get tickets here.
Finally, music fans in town for the Breeders’ Cup are spoilt for choice Friday evening in downtown Lexington. Premier blues musician and five-time Grammy Award winner Robert Cray, who has been releasing records and playing live for over 50 years, brings his band to the Lexington Opera House for a show on his All Amped Up Tour – ticket info here.
Just down the street at Rupp Arena, Johnny Blue Skies & the Dark Clouds will rock Rupp Arena at a stop on their Mutiny for the Masses Tour. Who the hell is Johnny Blue Skies, you might ask? None other than Kentucky native and Americana music-mainstay Sturgill Simpson, fronting an alter-ego persona that amps up the dance and funk quotient compared with Simpson’s earlier catalog. Get ticket info here.
Saturday, Oct. 31
Gatton Park will host another “Breeders’ Cup Watch Party” from 11 a.m.-6 p.m., and then after the Championship Saturday card concludes, innumerable Halloween parties will kick off in the city, many at local bars. However, Lexington’s famous Thriller parade, where participants dress up as zombies and emulate Michael Jackson’s famous 1984 video by shuffling ominously down Main Street in front of hundreds of fascinated onlookers, will actually be held Sunday evening, Oct. 25, starting at 6:30 p.m. Info here.
