A Day in the Life of a Kentucky Derby Horse
Former jockey Zoe Cadman now works as an analyst with online horse racing network XBTV in California while also working as an account manager and racing liaison for Thoroughbred consignor Eaton Sales. Get to know her in the fun Q&A below.
What I do for a living: Pretty much everything; my main job of course is a host/analyst for XBTV and while I type this I am sitting high in the grandstand at Santa Anita getting some works with my trusty cameraman Joe Chillie. I also assist my good friend Marrette Farrell at various sales across the country as well as help recruit horses/mares for Eaton Sales. In my spare time I may clip a couple as well. If it involves anything with four legs I’m all in!
What I like about Thoroughbred racing: Like? I love everything.
If I wasn’t in my current job, I would be: most likely unemployed.
Best advice to someone considering becoming a Thoroughbred owner: If you break even you are winning! Be prepared to have fun, and bring your friends.
Should the Breeders’ Cup rotate from coast to coast or have a permanent home: It should rotate, this is a sport we need to promote from coast to coast. Breeders’ Cups at Del Mar and Keeneland were very well done.
My top three favorite racetracks in order: Santa Anita, Keeneland, Randwick
Most influential person in my career: Too many to mention
My out-of-the-box idea for Thoroughbred racing: Make it fun; a day’s racing is too long for the die-hard fans, 30 minutes between post is too much. Run a race every 15 minutes and run it on time. Think a two-hour football game. (I’m not sure how the logistics would work but it would be fun to try.)
Other sports/teams I follow: Chicago Cubs and Bears
My favorite athletes of all time: Serena Williams, Frankie Dettori
What book(s) I am reading or have recently read: “The Perfect Horse” by Elizabeth Letts and “Small Fry” by Lisa Brennan-Jobs
Favorite magazines: The New Yorker, BloodHorse, National Geographic, and any tabloid crap found at any airport.
Hobbies away from Thoroughbred racing: Hiking, biking, camping, exploring new places, concerts, dive bars
Favorite movies: All-time favorite has to be “Calamity Jane”!
Favorite TV shows I watch: As long as it’s on Netflix or Amazon Prime I have been known to watch anything ... although I may be the only person reading this that has never watched “The Office” or “Game of Thrones.”
Favorite foods: Cheese sandwich
Favorite vacation spot: Belize (who am I kidding) … I’m open for invites though!
Favorite musician/band: Have to say I am an 80s girl.
Favorite actor: Clark Gable
Five websites I visit daily: xbtv.com, thetdn.com, BloodHorse, Equibase
I’d like to have dinner with the following three people inside racing: Charlie Whittingham, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and of course Princess Haya, Dermot Weld
I’d like to have dinner with the following three people outside of racing: Sir Elton John, Madonna, The Queen
Best racetrack food can be found at: Fair Grounds. Red beans and rice and the bread pudding is to die for.
Accomplishment I am most proud of: Being myself.
My philosophy on life: Perhaps my mum may regret telling me this many moons ago but her philosophy on life was and still is, “You always regret the things you DON’T do.”
Things I collect: Bills.
Favorite charities: ASPCA, Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, PDJF
Favorite authors: Virginia Wolf, Jane Austin, Jacki Collins
Favorite animal other than a horse: Doodle, my dog
Favorite non-Thoroughbred racing sports event I have attended: Badminton, Bears game
Three words that define what Thoroughbred racing means to me: Regal, majestic, frustrating
Top three fashion brands you prefer to wear: Have you seen me lately? Marshalls , T.J. Maxx, and if I’m feeling particularly flush Nordstrom Rack.
Favorite month of the year: August
What apps are on your phone: Find my iPad, Uber, NPR, Audible, Twitter, FB, Instagram, and many more I really don’t want to mention.
Favorite summer cocktail: Heineken
Favorite winter cocktail: Heineken
Favorite all-time racehorse: Desert Orchid. He was amazing.
Favorite race horse currently competing: It’s close: Collected and Vasilika.
Favorite international racing event: The Melbourne Cup
Three ways to attract more fans to the sport: Promote it better, we need uniformity in all jurisdictions, and have a governing body. It shouldn’t be this hard.
What do you drive for a car? A Honda Civic, I hate it, it can drive itself but I don’t care. Gutted I got rid of my Mini. Currently looking to ditch this.
