Tarantino won his debut in a one-mile grass race at Del Mar on Sept. 7. He stalked the pace and drew away to win by a length. In his next race, the Zuma Beach Stakes at Santa Anita on Oct. 4, he finished second by a nose to Ebeko.
Following that race, Tarantino was transferred from trainer Bob Baffert to the Rodolphe Brisset barn. He made his first start for his new trainer a winning one, winning an allowance race on the grass at Gulfstream Park on Dec. 11 by 1 1/4 lengths. Edgard Zayas was in the saddle for the victory.

In his dirt debut, Tarantino finished second in the Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream on Jan. 30. He battled on the early pace, then held well in the stretch to earn four points on the road to the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve. In his next start, the Grade 2 Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Stakes on Feb. 27, he finished fourth, earning five more points.
