Sunday’s cards at Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita Park are highlighted by the 1/ST Bet Coast to Coast Pick 5. The unique wager combines races from both tracks into one exciting sequence.

This Sunday features some extra excitement, as the pool will be seeded with $100,000 (unless there is a carryover from Saturday’s sequence). That means, before any additional money is bet, there’s plenty of money out there waiting to be divided among winning players.

What’s more, this Sunday’s sequence features exclusively grass races. There’s no better time to try the Coast to Coast Pick 5 if you haven’t already! As its name implies, the Coast to Coast Pick 5 is a bet that encompasses a five-race sequence of pre-selected races from two of the top tracks running at this time of year – Santa Anita and Gulfstream Park. The Coast to Coast Pick 5 has a player friendly 15% takeout with a $1 minimum bet.

We’ll take a closer look at the Santa Anita races in the sequence.

Leg 1: Santa Anita Park, Race 3, post time 5 p.m. ET

The action kicks off with the third race at Santa Anita, an allowance race for California-bred fillies and mares going 6 ½ furlongs on Santa Anita’s famed downhill grass course. We’ll use two horses to begin the sequence. #4 I’llhaveanotherkiss ran a big race at this level two races ago, leading almost the whole way around in the one-mile contest before fading late to fourth. The top two finishers in the race returned to win their next starts. In I’llhaveanotherkiss’ most recent effort, she raced wide throughout, again going a mile, and flattened out. She’ll get a much-needed cut back in distance and looks like the main speed of the field. That’ll be especially potent in this sprint contest. #5 Headed for Om made her grass debut a winning one last time out, coming from well off the pace to win going away despite being bothered in the stretch. That was just her second career start. She should get better with experience.

Leg 2: Gulfstream Park, Race 9, post time 5:20 p.m. ET

We’ll spread a little bit here in this 1 1/16-mile starter-optional claiming turf race and use #1 Smithwick’s Spice, #2 Rock the Stars, and #7 Tatanka while trying to beat 5-2 morning-line favorite #4 Eyes on the Target in the lone Gulfstream leg of the sequence.

The third leg takes us back to Santa Anita’s downhill course for the John Shear Stakes. We’ll use two horses in this race, both coming off of impressive wins. #1 King of Gosford made his stateside debut, and first start off a 4 ½-month layoff, in his most recent try. He battled for the early lead in a multi-way speed duel, but left his dueling partners in the dust and drew off to a clear victory. He should only get better in his second race after the layoff. #6 Nesso’s Lasthurrah has run two big races in a row on dirt, but he did break his maiden on turf at Del Mar last fall and will be very potent if his form transfers over at all.

Leg 4: Santa Anita Park, Race 7, post time 7 p.m. ET

This is a California-bred maiden race going six furlongs on the turf. This is a virtual rematch of the Race 9 on March 8 (won by Headed for Om, who returns in today’s 3rd race); all but one horse who finished behind Headed for Om that day is back here. I’ll go a bit outside the box and use two horses who have never run on grass before, but who have pedigrees that suggest they’ll like it. #10 Ace Ace Baby went off favored in her debut against Cal-bred maiden claimers, but couldn’t catch up to an early leader who got away with a slow second quarter-mile and settled for a runner-up finish. Still, it was a respectable showing at first asking, and she should only get better with experience. What’s more, progeny of her sire, Stanford, win at 21% rate first time on grass, and her dam, Swiftly Risen, has produced a grass winner. Swiftly Risen herself is a half-sister (same dam, different sire) to a grass winner. #11 Bit’s Tiger Magic went off as the odds-on choice against a similar level of competition in her career debut. She sent one of her pace pressurers into a sound defeat, but couldn’t hold off the other. Much like Ace Ace Baby, it was a promising performance at first asking. Her dam, Magic School, was a three-time winner on grass, and both of this one’s siblings to race have won on turf.

Leg 5: Santa Anita Park, Race 9, post time 8 p.m. ET

The final leg of the sequence is the Angel’s Flight Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at 6 ½ furlongs on the downhill course. This looks like a “single or spread” type of spot, as many tickets are likely to use #7 Laulne, who most recently competed in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on this track last November. She was well-beaten in that race, but won a Group 3 race in her native France last year and was group stakes-placed in two other tries. She’s obviously taking a giant drop in class, cuts back from a mile to a more ideal distance, and has worked well since late January for trainer Phil D’Amato. While it can be tough taking a low price on a horse who hasn’t raced in so long, if she runs her race, she should beat these easily.

The Pick 5 ticket:

  • Leg 1: 4,5
  • Leg 2: 1,2,7
  • Leg 3: 1,6
  • Leg 4: 10,11
  • Leg 5: 7

Total cost: $24

Best of luck to everyone playing along!
