Rhetorical has been a very important horse for young trainer Will Walden as he builds his career. The New York-bred gelding became Walden’s first Grade 1 stakes winner in fall 2025 when he took the Coolmore Turf Mile Stakes at Keeneland. Now, a year later, team Walden returned to the Lexington track for a repeat bid, and Rhetorical delivered with an exciting, front-running win Oct. 3 under Irad Ortiz Jr.
America’s Best Racing was on the scene as Walden prepared Rhetorical for the Turf Mile and strategized with Ortiz in the paddock, and after the victory discussed the gelding’s chances in the Oct. 31 Breeders’ Cup Mile back at Keeneland.
“My team just put so much time and patience into a horse that needed time and patience,” Walden said. “I know these horses don’t come along every day, and I’m just trying to soak in and enjoy every day that we have.”
