Beyond the Silks: Horses, Baseball, and Lots of Family Fun at Hernandez Farm

10.02.2026

Growing up in Louisiana, Brian Hernandez Jr. started riding horses as a preteen. Now a Kentucky Derby and Breeders’ Cup-winning jockey, he and wife Jamie, a former assistant trainer, are exposing their three children to the equine world in a fun, structured environment on Hernandez Farm (est. 2019).

All three kids – Joshlyn, Benjamin, and Annabelle – enjoy riding on the farm, but they work hard too. When the chores are done, there’s plenty of time for other activities such as baseball practice.

“Of course, we’re really proud of them, because they put a lot of work into it,” Brian says. “The minute they get off the bus at school, they’re here in the barn, and they have to take care of all the horses. We don’t really help them a whole lot – it’s their responsibility to feed them and take care of them and come out and ride every day.”

The Beyond the Silks series is presented by America’s Best Racing and Breeders’ Cup.
