Three-year-olds take center stage in Saturday’s Grade 3 Ontario Derby at Woodbine. The race usually draws a mix of Ontario-bred and U.S.-bred colts and geldings and that’s the case this year, with a field headlined by upset King’s Plate winner Mansetti.

Trainer Kenny McPeek announced Oct. 15 that 2024 Horse of the Year Thorpedo Anna has been officially retired from racing and will call John Sikura’s Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms at Xalapa near Paris, Ky., her home as she embarks on her second career as a broodmare.

Few sports fans ever have the privilege of watching a world-class trainer cultivate a champion athlete—and even fewer fans have the opportunity to witness the development of an elite animal athlete. With less than three weeks remaining until the 42nd running of the Breeders’ Cup, it was a relatively quiet week across North America in terms of high-prestige races, one exception being the $800,000 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes Presented by Dixiana for 3-year-old fillies Oct. 11 at Keeneland.

Apparently, there is a multitude of 3-year-old filly sprinters looking for graded stakes honors in their own age bracket before the year ends. That would explain why Saturday’s $400,000 Lexus Raven Run Stakes, a Grade 2 stakes at Keeneland, attracted an overflow field of 15 that includes three also-eligible entrants.
