Once upon a time, there was a boy and a horse, and together, they made magic happen. The bond between humans and horses is a timeless one, brought to life on the page and screen through Alec and the Black Stallion or Velvet and the Pie. Each brings out something special in the other, that connection helping them realize the best in themselves.

One of the biggest live horse racing events on the annual calendar is right around the corner. The 2025 Far Hills Race Meeting will be run as a one-day event on Saturday, Oct. 18. The race day has become an official part of the annual New Jersey Thoroughbred racing calendar as New Jersey racing shines the spotlight solely on the steeplechase races at Far Hills this weekend.

Every once in a while I like to veer off the beaten path in this blog, and when I do so it’s usually for one of two reasons: it’s a Mid-Atlantic-based racehorse (hey, I’m a Delaware Park guy) or it’s a Thoroughbred who has flashed eye-catching finishing speed. In Ultimate Love’s case, it’s the best of both worlds.

Keeping top company across the country throughout her 3-year-old season, Lush Lips had yet to earn her signature victory until that changed when her year's worth of work culminated in an eye-catching triumph in the $665,300 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes presented by Dixiana Oct.

Ken McPeek, trainer and part-owner of Thorpedo Anna, was interviewed in a video clip Oct. 9 that seemed to suggest the 2024 Horse of the Year could be retired before getting a chance to secure a repeat victory in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff. We’ll see.
