The Saturday, Jan. 31 card at Gulfstream Park featured five stakes, highlighted by key prep races on the Road to the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks. The action at Gulfstream combined with two graded stakes at Tampa Bay Downs helped reshape the Equibase leaderboard, with new leaders emerging in the 3-year-old divisions.

Nearly, a 3-year-old colt by Not This Time, delivered a dominant performance in the Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park, winning by 5 ¾ lengths for the Hall of Fame duo of Todd Pletcher and John Velazquez. The victory marked Nearly’s third consecutive win and vaulted him into first on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard with 20 points. With two victories already in 2026, including the lion’s share of Saturday’s $275,000 purse, Nearly now leads the 3-year-old male division and ranks sixth overall with $221,550 in purse earnings.

The Grade 3 Forward Gal Stakes also produced a dominant performance by the progeny of Not This Time. On Time Girl drew off to score a three-length victory under Irad Ortiz Jr., giving trainer Brad Cox the first- and third-place finishers. An Albaugh Family Stables’ homebred, On Time Girl collected 20 points on the Road to the Kentucky Oaks and improved to four wins and a second from five career starts. With $90,210 in earnings for Saturday’s win, On Time Girl ranks fourth among 3-year-old fillies and 29th overall on the Equibase leaderboard.

Sister Troienne continued her strong 3-year-old campaign with a 2 ¾-length victory in the Sweetest Chant Stakes earlier on Saturday’s card, marking her second stakes win at Gulfstream Park in January, following a victory in the Ginger Brew Stakes by 1 ¾ lengths Jan. 3. With $180,420 in 2026 earnings, Sister Troienne moved into first place in the 3-year-old filly division and seventh overall on the leaderboard. She has a five-race winning streak for trainer Brian Lynch.

Lynch also picked up a turf stakes victory Saturday at Gulfstream with Thousandsticks, who prevailed by a neck in the Kitten’s Joy Stakes under Mario Gutierrez. Lynch enjoyed a standout week overall, recording four wins from six starts to lead all North American trainers for the week with $255,335 in earnings.

Tampa Bay Downs featured two graded stakes races on Saturday’s card: the Grade 3 Tampa Bay Stakes and the Grade 3 Endeavour Stakes, each with a $175,000 purse. Quatrocento, a 5-year-old son of War Front, earned the highest Equibase Speed Figure of any horse in North America last week, posting a 111 for his front-running 3 ¾-length victory in the Tampa Bay Stakes. Aussie Girl also led from start to finish in the Endeavour, winning by 2 ½ lengths for trainer Will Walden’s sixth career graded stakes victory. Aussie Girl and Quatrocento are now tied for 31st with $90,000 in 2026 earnings with Aussie Girl rising to sixth in the older female division.

Tyler Gaffalione retained the lead in the jockey standings, however Irad Ortiz Jr. continues to close the gap. Ortiz Jr. led all jockeys last week by wins and earnings, taking 12 trips to the winner’s circle with $467,060 in earnings helped by two stakes wins at Gulfstream. Ortiz Jr. remains in second with $2,818,135 in 2026 earnings but leads all jockeys by wins with 41 (27%).

Thanks to a one-two finish in the Pegasus World Cup, trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. holds a commanding lead in the trainer standings with just over $3 million in purse earnings. Brad Cox ($1.7 million) and Steve Asmussen ($1.6 million) currently are in a tight race for second.
