The opening weekend of Keeneland’s Spring Meet along with other stakes races around the country reshaped the Equibase leaderboard in a big way, with eight horses moving into the top 25 in the overall standings for 2026 North American earnings. Three significant preps for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve led the way. With 25 days remaining until the 152nd running of Kentucky Derby and just one prep race left for the season this Saturday, the top 20 Derby contenders are all but solidified.
Further Ado is now second on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard after picking up 100 points for his dominating 11-length victory in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland. The Gun Runner colt began his 3-year-old campaign with a narrow runner-up finish in the ESMARK Tampa Bay Derby before keeping his perfect 2-for-2 Keeneland record intact on Saturday following a maiden win last fall, and he is now fifth on the overall 2026 earnings leaderboard and fourth in the 3-year-old male division with $825,625.
In the final edition of the Wood Memorial Stakes Presented by Resorts World Casino to ever be run at Aqueduct, Albus sprung an 11.89-1 upset with a 1 ¼ length victory. The Yaupon colt earned 100 Derby points and a spot in the starting gate on the first Saturday in May. Trainer Riley Mott, who has never had a Kentucky Derby starter, will have two horses in this year’s Derby with Albus and Incredibolt. Albus won a maiden race by 6 ¾ lengths in February at Tampa Bay Downs before making his stakes debut a winning one on Saturday. Now 2-for-2 with $419,200 in earnings in 2026, Albus now ranks 11th in the 3-year-old male division and 19th overall.
In the historic Santa Anita Derby, So Happy drove clear to win by 2 ¾ lengths over heavy favorite Potente for trainer Mark Glatt with Hall of Famer Mike Smith aboard. Sent off at odds of 7.30-1, the Runhappy colt took command at the top of the stretch and battled with Potente before proving best in the final sixteenth of a mile to earn his spot in the Kentucky Derby. So Happy ranks ninth in the 3-year-old male division and 16th overall with $444,000 in 2026 earnings.
On Saturday at Keeneland, Irad Ortiz Jr. took three trips to the winner’s circle and won both Grade 1 stakes on the card aboard Eclatant in the Resolute Racing Madison Stakes and Further Ado in the Blue Grass. Ortiz Jr. finished the week with $1,593,101 in earnings and moved into first in the North American jockey colony based on 2026 earnings, totaling $7,608,073. Flavien Prat also eclipsed $7 million in earnings this year, but moved down a spot into second, now $317,374 behind Ortiz Jr.
Last week, Brad Cox extended his lead in the trainer standings by nearly $2 million more than Steve Asmussen in second. Cox won three of the four graded stakes races on Saturday at Keeneland, including the Blue Grass with Further Ado, and finished in the top three at a 77% rate from 13 starts throughout the week with $1,593,101 in earnings. He became the first trainer this year to surpass $7 million and then the first to reach $8 million, and he now has $8,582,160 in 2026 earnings.
