Belmont Winner Rags to Riches in League of Her Own
The final Preakness Stakes has been run at Pimlico Race Course, marking the end of an era and many years of memories at “Old Hilltop.” Fans celebrated a thrilling weekend of racing in Maryland, which brought not only emotional farewells as the historic building will be torn down and replaced with a modern, new grandstand but also significant movement across the 2025 Equibase leaderboard, headlined by Journalism’s win in the 150th Preakness.
Journalism justified his favoritism in the Preakness with a powerful late rally, edging past Gosger in the final strides to win by half a length. The victory earned him a 109 Equibase Speed Figure, his sixth consecutive triple-digit performance, and propelled him into second place on the 2025 leaderboard of horses racing in North America behind Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve winner Sovereignty. Journalism has three wins and a second-place finish in the Kentucky Derby through four starts this season – all coming in graded stakes – and $2,680,000 in earnings, further solidifying his position as one of the nation’s top 3-year-olds.
Umberto Rispoli, a native of Italy and a recent feature on the Netflix series Race for the Crown, captured his first career victory in a Triple Crown race Saturday in the Preakness. Rispoli had a standout week overall, winning at a 38% clip and taking three trips to the winner’s circle, two of which came in graded stakes. He led all jockeys in North America last week with $1,352,280 in earnings. After his impressive performance in Maryland, Rispoli became the seventh jockey in 2025 to surpass $6 million in earnings and he has moved to seventh in the earnings rankings for North America-based jockeys.
Trainer Michael McCarthy scored his second career Preakness victory on Saturday with Journalism after winning the 2021 edition with Rombauer. Following wins at Pimlico and Santa Anita Park last week, McCarthy led all trainers in North America with $1,257,138 in earnings and now is ranked ninth among all North America-based trainers in earnings.
Flavien Prat and Irad Ortiz Jr. continue to hold the top two spots on the jockey leaderboard, but it was Luis Saez who made a significant move into third following a highly productive week. Saez notched six victories, riding at a 21% clip, and earned $896,640, making him just the fourth jockey in 2025 to surpass $10 million in earnings. Notably, he had a standout performance on Sunday at Churchill Downs, where he tallied four wins in a single card. Saez also finished second in the Preakness aboard Gosger.
North American leaders lists for horses, jockeys, trainers, and owners are available on equibase.com and you can filter the data to view by a wide variety of categories including age, sex, surface, and race type.
