The Stonestreet Lexington Stakes generally offers a last chance for a 3-year-old prospect to move into the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve. Not this year. With a maximum of 20 qualifying points up for grabs, the winner of Saturday’s stakes at Keeneland will fall far short of the cutoff to qualify for the May 3 run for the roses. Still with an evenly matched field of nine, it could be an interesting betting race.

Racetrack: Keeneland Race Course, Lexington, Ky.

Date: April 12

Purse: $400,000

Distance: 1 1/16 miles on dirt

Race: 9

Post Time: 5:16 p.m. ET

Notable winners: Owendale (2019), Collected (2016), Charismatic (1999), Touch Gold (1997), Hansel (1991), Risen Star (1988), Wise Times (1986).

First held (as 3-year-old stakes): 1984

1. Hard as Life (30-1 morning-line odds): Has yet to be tested on dirt. Has the breeding for it, being a son of Gun Runner, but has yet to show the kind of potential to make him a contender.

JOCKEY: Sophie Doyle; TRAINER: Michelle Nihei

2. Bracket Buster (20-1): Figures to be a longshot. Was fifth last year in the Street Sense Stakes and hasn’t run in the five months since then.

JOCKEY: Manny Franco; TRAINER: Victoria Oliver

3. Bullard (9-2): Has not run since finishing third in the San Vicente Stakes at Santa Anita Park in early January. Won the Grade Bob Hope Stakes before that and should be a contender on his best try.

JOCKEY: Umberto Rispoli; TRAINER: Michael McCarthy

4. Rolando (6-1): Rolando’s status for this race could be in jeopardy after he finished fourth in the Lafayette Stakes Monday at Keeneland. Prior to that race, he recorded a win in the six-furlong Hutcheson Stakes. His longest race was a mile and he finished third. Has the speed to lead, but can he hang on?

JOCKEY: John Velazquez; TRAINER: Fausto Gutierrez

5. Native Runner (15-1): Exits starter allowance and maiden wins at Fair Grounds and seems to be on the upswing for trainer Ken McPeek. Merits some attention in this field.

JOCKEY: Jose Ortiz; TRAINER: Ken McPeek

6. Gosger (7-2): Won a maiden race in a fast time in his second start. This will be his first try around two turns but he appears to be bred for it. Continued improvement puts him in the picture for a victory.

JOCKEY: Irad Ortiz Jr.; TRAINER: Brendan Walsh

7. Praetor (2-1): Was an easy winner of his lone 3-year-old start, an allowance race at Gulfstream Park, and defeated one of the top Kentucky Derby contenders, Sovereignty, last year. Looks like a major player here.

JOCKEY: Flavien Prat; TRAINER: Chad Brown

8. Hypnus (6-1): Was seventh in the Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby and Fasig-Tipton Risen Star Stakes. Faces an easier challenge here, but an outside post doesn’t help his cause.

JOCKEY: Luis Saez; TRAINER: Ken McPeek

9. Touchy (8-1): Tired and finished third in his lone try around two turns, the Sunland Park Derby. Has yet to put in an effort that stamps him as a main contender. He finished third in the Lafayette Stakes on Monday, so this would be a quick turnaround unless he is scratched.

JOCKEY: Joel Rosario; TRAINER: Wesley Ward

THE PICK: Praetor

LIVE LONGSHOT: Native Runner

SUPERFECTA: 7-6-5-3
