The Juddmonte Spinster Stakes on Sunday features a 2022 champion, Nest, taking on Idiomatic, one of the hottest older females in training, and that type of matchup is exactly what racing fans have come to expect from this staple of the Keeneland fall meet.

Juddmonte Spinster Stakes

Notable winners: Malathaat (2022), Blue Prize (2018, 2019), Azeri (2004), Take Charge Lady (2002, 2003), Banshee Breeze (1998), Inside Information (1995), Paseana (1993), Bayakoa (1989, 1990) Sacahuista (1987), Princess Rooney (1984), Susan’s Girl (1973, 1975), Gallant Bloom (1969), and Doubledogdare (1956).

First held: 1956

In fact, few races from coast to coast have had as strong a historical impact on the Breeders’ Cup World Championships as the Spinster has had on the Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff. Princess Rooney (1984), Sacahuista (1987), Bayakoa (1989, 1990), Inside Information (1995), Blue Prize (2019), and Malathaat a year ago all completed the Spinster-Distaff sweep in the same year, while Life’s Magic, Paseana, Spain, Unbridled Elaine, and Pleasant Home competed in the Spinster in the year they prevailed in the Distaff.

1. Sixtythreecaliber (15-1 morning-line odds): Toss her most recent start on a sloppy track as she does not thrive on “off” tracks, and her three races before that indicate she should be competitive here. Not sure she’s fast enough to win but capable of a top-three finish at a decent price.

JOCKEY: Edgar Morales TRAINER: Tom Amoss

2. Idiomatic (7-5): Her lone defeat in seven starts this year came in a one-turn mile but other than that she has been absolutely electric. With victories in the Grade 3 Shawnee Stakes, Grade 2 Delaware Handicap, and Grade 1 Personal Ensign Stakes in her last three, defeating Nest by 4 ¼ lengths in the last of them, Idiomatic is the one to beat.

JOCKEY: Florent Geroux TRAINER: Brad Cox

3. Nest (6-5): She has not been quite as good — or fast — this year as she was when taking home champion 3-year-old filly honors in 2022, but Nest is eligible to improve in her third start of the year following an 8 ½-month layoff. Posted the best speed figure of her career on this main track and figures to get a perfect trip tucked in behind the favorite.

JOCKEY: Irad Ortiz Jr. TRAINER: Todd Pletcher

4. Le Da Vida (6-1): Ran a terrific race in a stakes win in June at Thistledown that earned a 111 Equibase Speed Figure. She followed up with a close second in the Molly Pitcher Stakes at Monmouth Park, but was well-beaten most recently in a Grade 3 race at Churchill Downs. Talented filly but a tough spot.

JOCKEY: Vincent Cheminaud TRAINER: Ignacio Correas IV

5. Bellamore (20-1): Could push probable favorite Idiomatic for the early lead and has run well in six tries at this distance, including a close third (finished second but disqualified and placed third) in the Grade 2 Fleur de Lis Stakes in July at Churchill Downs. Worthy of consideration to fill out the trifecta.

JOCKEY: Martin Garcia TRAINER: Carlos Santamaria

6. Misty Veil (20-1): Beaten by 4 ¾ lengths or more in each of her last four starts. Earned her best Equibase Speed Figure at this distance but appears to be outclassed on paper.

JOCKEY: James Graham TRAINER: Mike Maker

7. Malloy (30-1): Finished fourth and 16 ¼ lengths behind Idiomatic in her most recent start in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign. That’s quite a bit of catching up to do. Prefer others to fill out the trifecta.

JOCKEY: Jose Lezcano TRAINER: Wayne Catalano

THE PICK: Idiomatic

LIVE LONGSHOT: Bellamore
