all in Breeders' Cup

Maxfield won the 2019 Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland in his second start for owner-breeder Godolphin and trainer Brendan Walsh and headed west as one of the favorites for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita Park.

But he was scratched from the race and underwent surgery for an ankle chip a couple of weeks later, costing himself a championship opportunity.

Perhaps the fifth time will be the charm for trainer Chad Brown.

Citizen Bull captured the $300,000 American Pharoah Stakes presented by DK Horse in front-running fashion to lead a 1-2 finish for trainer Bob Baffert in the Grade 1 race for 2-year-olds Oct. 5 at Santa Anita Park.

Few owners and breeders have been more successful in North American racing than Godolphin, especially in recent years. Since 2021, the global racing and breeding operation has netted six Eclipse Awards for leading owner and breeder, nine Breeders’ Cup wins, and a classic win in the 2021 Belmont Stakes with Essential Quality.

As the 35th Breeders’ Cup World Championships approached, one of the main storylines involved a European superstar who was planning an overseas jaunt with an elusive goal in her sights.
