History

The FrontRunner Stakes has been a fall staple at Santa Anita Park since 1970. Formerly known as the Norfolk Stakes, the race occurs in late September and, as a "Win and You're In" qualifier, often determines the leading West Coast 2-year-old heading into the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. American Pharoah won the race en route to champion 2-year-old honors in 2014. The next year, Nyquist won the race on his way to champion 2-year-old honors.

Other top-class horses to have won the FrontRunner include Chief's Crown, Capote, Best Pal, Bertrando, Free House, Dixie Union and Lookin at Lucky. Jockey Alex Solis and trainer Bob Baffert each have a record seven wins in the race.
