Tiznow, the Two-Time Breeders' Cup Winner and Beacon of Hope After Sept. 11
Five Key Historical Trends to Know When Betting the 2026 Breeders’ Cup Distaff
Gambling
Nine talented fillies and mares were pre-entered the 2026 Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff, a $2 million Grade 1 race scheduled for Oct. 31 at Keeneland Race Course.
The prospective field includes seven Grade 1 winners, three champions, and three past Breeders’ Cup winners.
How do we determine the most likely winner in a field this competitive? We suggest reviewing the last 20-plus years of Breeders’ Cup Distaff history to identify trends and tendencies common among past winners.
Here’s what the historical data reveals:
Speed is a slight advantage
The Breeders’ Cup Distaff is generally a fair race that doesn’t strongly favor any particular running style. Over the last 20 years, we’ve seen three winners who led after the opening half-mile, five other winners who were racing second or third at that juncture, seven winners who were positioned fourth through sixth, and five winners who closed from between seventh and ninth place.
If there’s one bias, it’s that horses racing in the front half of the field after the opening half-mile have won 13 of the last 20 editions of the Distaff (65%), as opposed to six winners from the back half of the field (30%) and one winner (5%) who closed from precisely midfield. Early speed may be slightly advantageous.

Favor the favorite and horses under 6-1 odds

Betting the favorite is often a sound strategy in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. The top betting choice has prevailed 18 times in 42 years (43%).
In general, short-priced runners perform well. Horses starting at odds under 6-1 have won 30 out of 42 editions of the Distaff (71%).
Established Grade 1 winners are tough to beat
Proven Grade 1 winners typically prevail in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. They’ve taken first prize in 17 of the last 20 editions (85%). Also, two of the winners who defied this trend (Scylla and Unrivaled Belle) had finished second multiple times at the Grade 1 level.
Saratoga is the best place to prep
Did you know 12 of the last 20 Breeders’ Cup Distaff winners (60%) competed at Saratoga at least once in the year of their Breeders’ Cup triumph?
A particularly strong Saratoga prep for the Distaff is the Grade 1 Personal Ensign Stakes, which has produced five of the last 14 Distaff winners. This run of success has coincided with the Personal Ensign being shortened from 1 1/4 miles to 1 1/8 miles (matching the Distaff’s distance) starting in 2012.
Older horses are more likely to win
The Breeders’ Cup Distaff is open to fillies and mares ages 3 years old and older. Older horses (those aged 4 and older) are more likely than 3-year-olds to win the Distaff. Older horses have represented 66% of Distaff starters since 2006, but they’ve recorded 75% of the wins.
Three-year-old fillies hold their own in the battle for minor awards. They’ve represented 34% of Distaff starters since 2006, and though they’ve recorded only 25% of the wins, they’ve secured 38% of the top-three finishes.
Conclusions
Nitrogen is a perfect match for our historical profile of a typical Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner.
Voted champion 3-year-old filly of 2025 after winning the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes Presented by Keeneland Sales and finishing second in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, Nitrogen has been stronger than ever as a 4-year-old this season. At Saratoga, she obliterated the competition in the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps Stakes Presented by Ford by 12 3/4 lengths before finishing second to 2025 Horse of the Year Sovereignty in a deep edition of the Grade 1 Whitney Stakes.
Nitrogen has lots of early speed and may set the pace in the Distaff, so her running style is suitable. She’s very likely to start as the betting favorite after prepping with a win in the Grade 2 Beldame Stakes, so that’s another positive in her favor. All signs suggest Nitrogen is the filly to beat.
Fully Subscribed, a 9 3/4-length winner of the Grade 1 Personal Ensign Stakes at Saratoga this year, is another logical contender with tactical speed and top-tier form. The 4-year-old filly exits a win in the Grade 1 Juddmonte Spinster Stakes and will certainly start at under 6-1 odds. But she could only finish in a dead-heat for second behind Nitrogen in the Ogden Phipps, which should ensure that Nitrogen starts as the Distaff favorite, giving Nitrogen a slim edge in the historical trends.
Enjoy the race!
