During two-plus months of exciting summer racing at Saratoga Race Course, we witnessed many talented 2-year-old Thoroughbreds deliver eye-catching victories suggesting they’re serious prospects for the 2026 Breeders’ Cup World Championships, 2027 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve, and 2027 Kentucky Oaks.

Which of these rising stars impressed the most? In reverse order, here’s how we rank the top five 2-year-olds who raced during the 2026 summer at Saratoga:

5. Pharocity

Debut winner Pharocity (Eclipse Sportswire)

Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen has overseen the careers of many champions. Perhaps Pharocity will develop into Asmussen’s next stable star.

A son of 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, Pharocity debuted Sept. 5 in a maiden special weight sprinting seven-eighths of a mile. He left no doubt about his superiority. Facing eight oppnents, Pharocity dashed to the lead, set quarter-mile fractions of :22.91 and :46.09, and then clocked his final three furlongs in a swift :36.93 to win by 5 3/4 lengths.

Pharocity reached the finish line in 1:23.02. He wasn’t the quickest winner on the day (as we’ll explore shortly), but Pharocity’s strong finish down the homestretch suggests he’ll improve when tackling longer distances in the future.

4. The Good Life

The Good Life wins Hopeful (Eclipse Sportswire)

Two starts, two wins. The Good Life competed with aplomb during the summer, emerging as a young star in the making for trainer Brad Cox.

The Good Life kicked off his career on July 18 in a maiden special weight race dashing three-quarters of a mile. He opened up a large lead through fractions of :22.92 and :45.69 before powering to the finish line clear by 3 1/2 lengths in the winning time of 1:11.14.

The Good Life was even more impressive when facing tougher competition in the Grade 1 Spendthrift Farm Hopeful Stakes sprinting seven-eighths of a mile on Sept. 6. Again, he raced to the lead, setting fractions of :22.71 and :45.40. Again, he carried a commanding advantage at the finish line, passing the finish line in front by four lengths in 1:24.08.

The 1 1/16-mile FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance looms as an obvious year-end target for The Good Life.

3. Summer Starlet

Dominant Spinaway winner Summer Starlet (Eclipse Sportswire)

Summer Starlet, from the barn of Asmussen, has a strong chance to be the dominant juvenile filly of 2026 after opening her career with back-to-back wins at Saratoga.

Summer Starlet impressed when debuting Aug. 8 in a maiden special weight at 6 1/2 furlongs. She rated about four lengths behind quick pace fractions of :21.86 and :45.82 before swooping to the front and drawing away to win by 6 1/2 lengths in 1:16.62.

Summer Starlet was every bit as impressive in the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes, which took place at seven-eighths of a mile on Sept. 5. Showing improved early speed, she stayed within two lengths of an opening quarter-mile in :22.35 and a half-mile in :44.96, then powered away to triumph by 4 3/4 lengths in 1:22.72 — faster than Pharocity ran on the same afternoon. The future looks bright for Summer Starlet.

2. Gaudreau

Just how talented is Gaudreau? If his debut win in a 6 1/2-furlong maiden special weight race on Aug. 8 at Saratoga is any indication, he’s a serious racehorse.

Gaudreau started as the betting favorite and lived up to expectations. The Chad Brown trainee pressed the pace through quarter-mile splits of :22.38 and :45.23, took command in the homestretch, and then held off late charges from Coach Pope and U. S. S. Valor to prevail by half a length in 1:16.41.

It turns out Gaudreau beat a strong field. Coach Pope returned to win his next start by 12 1/2 lengths Sept. 12 at Churchill Downs, and U. S. S. Valor — as we’ll detail in a moment — dominated his next race by 13 1/4 lengths.

The fact Gaudreau defeated both Coach Pope and U. S. S. Valor is impressive. You can bet he’ll be a popular choice in the betting wherever he runs next.

1. U. S. S. Valor

U. S. S. Valor looks like a monster in the making for Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey.

Although U. S. S. Valor lost his Aug. 8 debut when facing Gaudreau, he didn’t run badly by any means. He got away to a subpar start but rallied willingly in the stretch to finish only three-quarters of a length away from victory.

On Sept. 5, U. S. S. Valor made his second start in a maiden special weight sprinting seven-eighths of a mile. This time, he was nothing short of sensational. He raced up front through quarter-mile fractions of :23.10 and :45.53, then blazed his final three furlongs in :36.51 to leave his pursuers 13 1/4 lengths behind.

U. S. S. Valor reached the finish line in 1:22.04, significantly faster than the winning times posted by Pharocity and Summer Starlet on the same afternoon. The Grade 1 Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park is next on his agenda.
