Equibase Leaderboard: Golden Tempo Extends Earnings Margin, Counting Stars Ascends in Female Division
Racing
The final Belmont Stakes Racing Festival at Saratoga delivered a memorable five days of competition featuring 18 graded stakes and more than $11 million in purses. Headlined by nine Grade 1 races across Friday June 5 and Saturday June 6, the festival produced significant movement on the Equibase leaderboard. From track-record performances to historic achievements, the week was packed with standout moments that reshaped the leaderboard as the summer racing season begins. We’ll focus on the 3-year-old divisions in this review.
Golden Tempo, a Phipps Stable and St. Elias Stable homebred by Curlin, came back from a memorable victory in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve to win the Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets by 1 ¼ lengths, making Cherie DeVaux the first female trainer in history to win multiple Triple Crown races and the second to win the Belmont. Under Jose Ortiz, Golden Tempo repeated his 100 Equibase Speed Figure he earned in the Derby and joined Sovereignty in 2025 as the only horse to win the Derby, skip the Preakness Stakes, and go on to win the third leg of the Triple Crown. Now with $4.6 million in 2026 earnings, Golden Tempo remains on top of the overall Equibase leaderboard.
In the DraftKings Acorn Stakes, one of three Grade 1 races on the June 5 card, Counting Stars proved much the best with a 3 ¾ length win for trainer Mark Casse with Irad Ortiz Jr. aboard. The daughter of Honor A. P. finished third in the Longines Kentucky Oaks before delivering a dominant performance in the Acorn. She moved into first in the 3-year-old filly division, now totaling $1,155,000 in 2026 earnings. In four consecutive graded stakes starts so far during her 3-year-old campaign, Counting Stars has never finished worse than third.
The Woody Stephens Stakes Presented by Mohegan Sun for 3-year-olds June 6 featured a rematch between Crude Velocity and Englishman, the 1-2 finishers in the Pat Day Mile Presented by SAP. Carrying odds of 4.28-1, Englishman dominated the Woody Stephens by 5 ¾ lengths under Jose Ortiz and tied the track record in 1:20.40 for seven furlongs on the dirt set by Darby Creek Road in 1978. Englishman has two wins and a second in 2026 for trainer Cherie DeVaux. Englishman earned a career-best 120 Equibase Speed Figure for his performance and moved into 18th in the 3-year-old male division and 43rd overall with $450,200 in 2026 earnings.
Among jockeys, Irad Ortiz Jr., Jose Ortiz and Flavien Prat remain in the top three spots on the Equibase earnings leaderboard, respectively, and all bankrolled over $2 million last week. Jose Ortiz led all jockeys by earnings with $2,542,475 from four stakes wins, including three Grade 1 victories, and he has eclipsed $17 million for the year. Irad Ortiz Jr. finished the week with $2,200,015 in earnings from 10 wins, including three graded wins at Saratoga. Ortiz Jr. traveled back to Churchill Downs on Sunday and scored a four-win day including a victory in the Matt Winn Stakes aboard 3-year-old Further Ado. He has surpassed $19 million in 2026 earnings. Prat also had 10 wins last week and had $2,457,015 in earnings by the end of Sunday, surpassing $17 million in 2026 earnings. Four of Prat’s 10 wins were in graded stakes, highlighted by Nysos’ romp in the Hill ‘n’ Dale Metropolitan Handicap, aka the “Met Mile,” June 6 at Saratoga.
On the training side, Brad Cox remains in first on the earnings leaderboard with nearly $3 million more than Steve Asmussen in second. Cox eclipsed $14 million for the year following eight wins last week. Cherie DeVaux moved up one spot on the leaderboard to seventh after her two Grade 1 wins discussed above, and has surpassed $7 million for the year. Chad Brown led all trainers by earnings last week with $1,914,007, winning three graded stakes June 5 at Saratoga.
