It’s opening weekend at Keeneland! When we last left Lexington, it was after a fall meet that perplexed handicappers with one big price after another. As we come back for the spring, we’ll try to find a few prices on Friday and Saturday that could provide significant boosts to the bankroll. The aim is to provide horses that are 6-1 or greater on the morning line.

Let’s take a look …

FRIDAY, APRIL 3

Race #2, Starter Allowance, 7 furlongs, dirt, 1:32 p.m. ET

Menkaure’s Jan. 9 maiden win at Turfway Park (Coady Media)

#8 Menkaure (6-1 morning line): Menkaure comes into this race after wintering at Turfway Park. She broke her maiden two starts back in a race that features several runners that will also line up here. Her three-back effort on dirt at Churchill wasn’t bad, either, as she broke quickly and set a legitimate pace going a mile before fading to finish third. This seven-furlong distance should suit her a bit better.

She’s a bit of a price because her first try against winners was disappointing. She was bet that day, going off at 3-1, but she faded after pressing the pace. She has, however, since gotten back on the workout tab for Will Walden, one of the highest-percentage trainers in the country, and she’ll get Irad Ortiz Jr. for Friday’s start. I’m more than happy to draw a line through the last-out clunker, because if she gets back to her two races before that, she’ll have a big chance.

Race #4, Maiden Special Weight, 6 ½ furlongs, dirt, 2:36 p.m. ET

#12 Where Luck Lives (10-1 ML): Many runners in this race are first-time starters, which makes me value those with experience. Where Luck Lives hasn’t run in a while, as her only start to date came in late-June. However, I think there’s plenty to like.

Where Luck Lives was fourth in her unveiling, one that was highly anticipated by connections that purchased her for $725,000 at auction the previous summer. She was wide that day, made contact with an opponent in mid-stretch, and was beaten by less than two lengths. She went to the sidelines in July but has since been working consistently in Florida for Brian Lynch, who has enlisted Hall of Famer Joel Rosario to ride.

It’s entirely possible she needs a race, and that’s why we’re getting the 10-1 price. However, if she’s ready to go (which I think she is), she could be a major player and make her odds look like a real overlay.

SATURDAY, APRIL 4

Race #4, Maiden Special Weight, 1 1/16 miles, turf, 2:36 p.m. ET

#8 Rune (15-1 ML): The first of two prices on Saturday is a pace play for me. Rune came off a bit of a break last time out at Turfway Park, and her lone effort prior to that wasn’t great. However, she showed some speed in her second start, dueling turning for home before finishing second going six furlongs on Turfway’s all-weather surface.

She stretches out to two turns for a trainer that does well with horses stretching out (8-for-44 with a $2.87 ROI, per TwinSpires), and this race feels very light on early zip. Joel Rosario gets the call here, and it feels like horse and rider could be allowed to dictate friendly terms on the front end. If that happens, she could get brave at a big price.

Race #11, $1.25 million Toyota Blue Grass Stakes, 1 1/8 miles, dirt, 6:22 p.m. ET

Great White, John Battaglia Memorial Stakes, Turfway Park, America's Best Racing, Triple Crown, Kentucky Derby, horse racing, ABR
Great White wins Battaglia Memorial (Coady Media)

#3 Great White (15-1 ML): I’ll finish with a price I like a bit in the main event. The Blue Grass has several heavy hitters, and it sure looks like there’ll be a pretty fast pace. With that in mind, I’m moving up horses that have proven they can close, and that includes Great White.

Most recently, this John Ennis trainee won the John Battaglia Memorial Stakes at Turfway. That day’s runner-up, Fulleffort, ran huge to take the Grade 3 Jeff Ruby Steaks, which flatters this one. He stalked the pace that day, but his prior two races saw him rate farther back, so he won’t be out of his element if jockey Alex Achard employs those tactics.

Great White has never run on dirt before, and this is a significant class test. However, his most recent local drill was a flashy one, and the likelihood of him getting his ideal race shape seems pretty high. At a minimum, don’t leave him off of your exotic bet tickets.
