Coal Battle

Coal Battle won his career debut by 3-1/2 lengths on a sloppy track at Evangeline Downs on July 25, 2024. In his second start he finished fourth in the $1 million Juvenile Mile at Kentucky Downs on the grass. After an unplaced finish on turf at Keeneland, he switched back to the dirt and earned a 2 1/2-length win in the $100,000 Jean Lafitte Stakes going 6 ½ furlongs over a muddy track at Delta Downs on Nov. 8. 

Coal Battle capped off his solid 2-year-old season with a half a length victory atop a 12-horse field in the $300,000 Remington Park Springboard Mile Stakes on Dec. 13. The Springboard Mile was a points race on the road to the 2025 Kentucky Derby, and with his win, Coal Battle picked up 10 Derby qualifying points.

Coal Battle was right back on the top of his game with another win in his next start in his 3-year-old debut in the $250,000 Smarty Jones Stakes going 1 1/16 miles at Oaklawn Park on Jan. 4, 2025. Coal Battle showed speed, dueled, secured the advantage, and drew off to a decisive four-length victory atop a six-horse field. The Smarty Jones was another Kentucky Derby points race, and with his win, Coal Battle earned another 10 Derby qualifying points to raise his total to 20.

Despite touting a perfect 4-for-4 record in dirt starts, Coal Battle was sent off at 10-1 odds in a loaded edition of the $1.25 million, Grade 2 Rebel Stakes Feb. 23 at Oaklawn. Breaking from the rail post position, he sat in midpack through the backstretch as frontrunning Madaket Road set a solid pace. Juan Vargas, who had ridden Coal Battle in both of his Derby prep victories, made a confident move to reach contention midway through the far turn, and Coal Battle wrested the lead from Madaket Road in early stretch. He was kept to task by Vargas in the final furlong as Madaket Road battled back, and Coal Battle proved tenacious once again in victory, prevailing by 1 ¼ lengths. By earning 50 additional qualifying points, the colt secured a position in the starting gate for Kentucky Derby 151, boosting his total to 70.

Coal Battle's winning streak came to an end in his next start which came in the Grade 1 $1.5 million Arkansas Derby going 1 1/8 miles at Oaklawn Park on March 29, but he did enough to remain on the Triple Crown trail with a third-place finish, beaten by seven lengths.

In the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve, Coal Battle never threatened and finished 11^th. He rebounded with a better effort in his first post-Derby start, finishing third behind East Avenue and Burnham Square in the June 8 Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill.

Coal Battle is trained by Lonnie Briley. He was bred in Kentucky by the sire Coal Front out of the mare Wolfblade by Midshipman.
