Tenma

Tenma make her career debut in a 2-year-old maiden race at Del Mar on Aug. 18, 2024, and was victorious at first asking when rallying from near the rear of a six-horse field to get up in time for a neck win going 5 1/2 furlongs on the dirt.

Tenma came back quickly in time to make her second lifetime start in the Grade 1 $300,000 Del Mar Debutante going seven furlongs on the main track at Del Mar on Sept. 7. Sent off as the 3-1 second choice on the tote board in a field of seven horses in the Debutante, Tenma once again made her move from off the pace and was able to prevail by a nose on the wire.

Tenma suffered the first loss of her career in her third outing when finishing third in the Grade 2 Oak Leaf Stakes presented by Oak Tree Racing on Oct. 5 at Santa Anita. She then skipped the Breeders' Cup.

Tenma made her return to the track to put the finishing touch on her excellent 2-year-old campaign with a victory in the Grade 2 $200,000 Starlet Stakes going 1 1/16 miles at Los Alamitos on Dec. 7. Sent off as the 2.50-1 second choice in a seven-horse field in the Starlet, Tenma led early and then fought for the lead much of the way around the track until eventually prevailing by 1 3/4 lengths.

On Feb. 2, 2025, Tenma started her 3-year-old campaign in the Grade 3 Las Viegenes Stakes at Santa Anita Park. She faced only two rivals after two other fillies were withdrawn and made short work of her opposition in the one-mile race, romping by 6 ½ lengths as the 1-5 favorite. In doing so, Tenma solidified her position as a leading contender for the Longines Kentucky Oaks on May 2.

Tenma had her final tune-up for the Kentucky Oaks in the Grade 2 $200,000 Santa Anita Oaks going 1 1/16 miles at Santa Anita on April 5. Racing in a field of five 3-year-old fillies as the 0.30-1 favorite in the Santa Anita Oaks, Tenma stalked the pace up close and moved up to challenge the leader at the top of the stretch and drew off to a 2 1/4-length win in a time of 1:46.15 under jockey Juan Hernandez.

Tenma is trained by Bob Baffert. She was bred in Kentucky by the sire Nyquist out of the mare Amagansett by Tapit.
