Freeport Joe made his stakes debut in the Grade 3 Berkeley Handicap at Golden Gate Fields on Nov. 27. He saved ground off the pace early on, then angled wide in the stretch and got up in the last few strides to pull off the 10.10-1 upset. His victory marked the first graded stakes win in the careers of trainer Gloria Haley and jockey Assael Espinoza.
A few months later, Freeport Joe won his first stakes race of 2022, when he came from behind to win the All American Stakes at Golden Gate on May 30.
