There is a fresh energy infusing the backside at Emerald Downs as they are ready for Opening Day of their 30th season on April 27. Horse racing has a long history in the Pacific Northwest that includes The Meadows (1902-1908), Longacres (1933-1992), and Emerald Downs, which opened in 1996.

The Churchill Downs backside comes to life a few weeks before the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve. While horses are stabled there nine months out of the year, some extra special ones call the backside their home in the weeks leading up to the Derby.

The Kentucky Derby is an event for the stars – both equine and human. Making it to the race is a dream of horse owners from all walks of life. For example, former Major League Baseball World Series champion Jayson Werth is back for the second year in a row with a horse in the Derby.

The Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve is the longest continuously held sporting event in America, with this year marking its 151st edition. Often referred to as the “most exciting two minutes in sports,” the iconic race first occurred May 17, 1875, at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., and has been run there every year since.

Television, livestreaming, and radio coverage of horse racing ramps up later this week in preparation for the 151st Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve. The following week will mark the culmination of national attention directed at the sport as excitement builds for the Derby every day up to “the first Saturday in May,” but analysis of contenders’ workouts plus early handicapping shows are already underway via several outlets.
