In recent years, Louisville has gone from having the reputation as a “hidden gem” on the dining and entertainment scene to being duly recognized as one of the best cities in the U.S. for unique restaurants and bars. And of course, the spotlight shines brightest on Kentucky’s biggest city during Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve week.

The food and drink scene in Louisville, like everywhere else on planet Earth, took a staggering hit during the COVID-19 pandemic, but it’s recovered quite nicely and activity has been at a full-tilt level since 2022. This year will be extra special as the Derby celebrates its 150th anniversary May 4, and tens of thousands of visitors are already making their way to “da Ville” for a week of merriment.

Here are some restaurant and bar options to consider during the week leading up to Derby 150, focusing on walk-in places since most, if not all, of the higher-end establishments are already fully booked.

Beer is in the name, but barbecue is the game at this popular smokehouse smack dab in the city’s best restaurant corridor. Ribs, wings, sandwiches, even hand-rolled wontons are among the fave menu items, and the building has ample outdoor seating for good weather days.

Derby City Pizza

Since 2005, the Derby City Pizza folks have been serving hearty fare to Louisville metro area diners with the motto, “Great food at better value.” There are several locations, and the one closest to Churchill Downs on Crittenden Drive promises to be busy nonstop from now until – who knows? Good outdoor seating at this spot as well.

One of the current “buzz” eateries, Breakfast AF was opened last year by the owners of nearby Hauck’s Corner tavern in the Schnitzelburg neighborhood – which is part of the larger Germantown area that’s a haven for Louisville hipsters. The decadent, creative menu features a Korean short rib and egg sandwich, empanadas, chicken with waffle fries (pictured), and much more.

But that’s not all. Each afternoon, the venue transitions to Pizza AF, serving delicious pizza that grew its initial following via a food truck. Open from 6:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. daily for breakfast/brunch, and then from 4 p.m. until midnight (10 p.m. on Sunday) for pizza.

Epiphany

It’s just a block away from the Baxter Ave. corridor filled with bars that cater to rowdy college-age partiers, but this craft cocktail bar is a world away in terms of atmosphere – offering a chill, comfortable space for conversation and trying creative beverage concoctions such as the Crayon Angel (pictured). A good beer menu, appetizers and non-alcoholic options are also available.
