Swifties, football fans, and horse racing fans learned Aug. 27 that Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro Travis Kelce became a part-owner of a 3-year-old racehorse named Swift Delivery. The Chiefs tight end, a three-time Super Bowl winner and boyfriend of pop icon Taylor Swift, attended the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve in May at Churchill Downs and purchased his interest in Swift Delivery through Team Valor International.

Barry Irwin, founder and CEO of Team Valor International, shared the news that the Zoldan family, owners of Phantom Fireworks, and Kelce, one of the NFL’s most recognizable names, have acquired a significant share of Team Valor’s interest in the gray or roan 3-year-old Not This Time gelding, who Team Valor owns with Gary Barber.

Here are five things to know about Swift Delivery:

1. He’s in very good hands! Swift Delivery is trained by Hall of Famer Mark Casse, who has amassed more than 3,800 wins in his career and won the Sovereign Award as Canada’s champion trainer 16 times. Casse trained Hall of Fame racehorse Tepin among many champions in the U.S. and Canada. “This is great for racing,” Casse said. “This isn’t just about Travis Kelce buying a horse – he bought a good horse.”

2. Indeed, Swift Delivery looks like a promising racehorse! After finishing unplaced in four races in 2023, Swift Delivery was gelded. A gelding is a male horse that has been neutered by having both testicles removed  — yes, sadly he will not be having crops of babies named after Taylor Swift songs … imagine the possibilities.

Sometimes male racehorses can be a bit "studdish" (exerting dominance) or lack focus. Gelding them can lead to significant improvement on the racetrack. That’s what happened with Swift Delivery, who finished third in his first two races this year before a 16 ½-length runaway victory June 23 and another win July 19. “When he won that race by 16 ½ lengths, I watched the finish with my mouth open,” Casse recalled. “When he won the other in July on the inner turf, he drew post 11. I told [owners] Gary [Barber] and Barry [Irwin] that this horse would have to be Superman to win that race from there.” Swift Delivery took flight.

3. You can watch Swift Delivery’s next race on Saturday. He will compete in a stakes race, which is a higher level of competition than his previous two wins, this weekend in Canada at Woodbine Racetrack. Swift Delivery has been entered in the $125,000 Toronto Cup Stakes Presented by Crown Royal, which is a one-mile race on the grass. Fans can watch the race, scheduled as the ninth race on Saturday (a little after 5 p.m. ET), live here: woodbine.com/watch-races/

4. Yes, Swift Delivery’s trainer is a huge fan of Taylor Swift! “Believe it or not, my wife [Tina] and I are Swifties,” Casse said. “We love Taylor Swift, and I am also a big Travis Kelce fan. Any time I can, I watch him play. My kids are excited, too. My daughter, who is in Calgary, called me. My son, who is in Ottawa, called me, too.”

5. The horse was, in fact, named after Taylor Swift … long before Travis Kelce became a part-owner. Swift Delivery began his career racing for owners D. J. Stable and Quintessential Racing Florida. Jon Green, general manager of D.J. Stable and host of the Rail Talk podcast, is a big fan of Taylor Swift and said the horse was named in her honor. Gary Barber purchased Swift Delivery before his second race of this year and sixth start overall in May. Team Valor and Kelce came on board as ownership shareholders before his most recent win.
