A new children’s book by former Major League Baseball player Chris Carpenter that tells the story of a real-life racehorse is set to be released in July with a percentage of the proceeds to be donated to the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing and providing sanctuary to retired racehorses. "The Long Shot" tells the heartwarming story of a remarkable horse who defied the odds and inspired so many.

Set against a backdrop of true events, the story is told with a poem that follows the incredible journey of Benbang, a filly who raced in New York and New Jersey in 2021 and 2022. The story encourages young readers to chase their dreams fearlessly, no matter what challenges lie ahead.

The author, a pitcher whose baseball career included stints with the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox in 2011 and 2012, is committed to supporting the mission of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation.

Carpenter collaborated with Saratoga artist Dave Papa, an artist based in Saratoga Springs whose extraordinary illustrations breathe life into the pages of “The Long Shot.”

"The Long Shot" will be available for purchase in July.
