This Saturday, Pimlico will host the 146th renewal of the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes, the second jewel in the Triple Crown. A field of some of the country’s top 3-year-olds, expected to include Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve winner Medina Spirit, will square off at 1 3/16 miles.

Last year’s renewal had a much different flavor due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The race was moved from its usual spot on the third Saturday in May to early October, and the 2020 Preakness was conducted without fans in attendance. This year, the race returns to its usual spot on the racing calendar and will be held with limited attendance.

Here’s what you need to know about this year’s Preakness.

CAPACITY NOTES AND SEATING OPTIONS

Fans were welcomed back to tracks in Maryland in early March. This year, there will be an attendance limit of 10,000 for the Preakness. Tickets went on sale beginning March 24, with fans who had tickets to last year’s Preakness receiving first priority.

All tickets must be purchased in advance.

There are several excellent seating options available, including the Turfside Terrace, located in the infield right on the inner rail of the grass course. The Turf Club is the most exclusive area within that pavilion, featuring special offerings for groups of four or six people. Individual tickets go for $725.

Private pavilions are also available in the white-tented Home Stretch Pavilion. Each tent features hardwood flooring and a garden area. The 1/ST Turn suites, located on the first turn, feature seating for up to 15 guests.

Tickets to the Turfside Terrace go for $500. Those who wish to purchase tickets can use the promo code “ABR10” for a 10% discount.

BLACK-EYED SUSAN DAY

Last year, the Grade 2 George E. Mitchell Black-Eyed Susan Stakes, the fillies’ equivalent of the Preakness, was held on the same day as the Preakness. This year, it’s been moved back to its usual spot on the Friday before the Preakness.

The Black-Eyed Susan highlights a stakes-packed Friday card that includes the Grade 3 Pimlico Special Match Series Stakes, the top race for older horses in Maryland, as well as four other stakes races. Post time for the first race on Black-Eyed Susan day is at 11:30 a.m. ET.

PREAKNESS LIVE

InfieldFest is one of the highlights of the Preakness experience, featuring live music from popular acts in the infield. With the limited crowd at this year’s Preakness, the festivities will return to the Preakness in 2021 but with a new name and a twist.

Called Preakness Live, this year’s event is headlined by D-Nice, 2 Chainz, and Jack Harlow. Event-goers will be able to enjoy the music in a safe, socially-distanced environment. Preakness Live will feature groups of eight in socially distanced pods, providing a unique concert-going atmosphere. Fans will also be able to order food, drinks, and merchandise through their phones.

Ticket prices range from $360 to $1,200. Event-goers can use the promo code “ABR10” for a 10% discount on tickets. For those who can’t make it, the event will be live-streamed on D-Nice’s #ClubQuarantine Instagram, and portions will be shown on NBC’s telecast of the Preakness from 5 to 7 p.m. ET.

GREENE TURTLE WATCH PARTY

Fourteen Greene Turtle locations in Maryland will host Preakness watch parties this coming Saturday. All week long, fans have the opportunity to win a VIP Experience at the 2022 Preakness through participating Greene Turtle locations.

Anyone who purchases a Watermelon Mule, a Finders Keepers Orange Wheat Tall Draft, an Elysian Space Dust Tall Draft, or a Premium Spirit Double will earn a card with a horse’s number on it. If that number wins the Preakness, those who have a card with that number will be entered in a drawing to win the VIP experience. Fans must be present at a participating Greene Turtle on Preakness day to be eligible for the grand prize.
