Tacos and Trifectas: Blue Grass Longshot

Events / Travel

Welcome to Tacos and Trifectas! Each week, America’s Best Racing’s Southern California correspondent Jose Contreras - @LosPonies to those who follow him on Twitter - will provide a taco review along with a selection that he will key in trifecta bets in hopes of winning some cash to buy more tacos! Contreras will map out a trifecta betting strategy for how to key his main pick and keep track of his return on investment (ROI), which was positive in 2017.

Stop back each week if you love tacos and want a trifecta play!

This week’s eatery:

Tacos Arandas

Moreno Valley, Calif.

Score: 7.9

The Good:

  • Both salsas were good
  • Carne asada had a good flavor and good seasoning
  • 99-cent tacos on Tuesdays
  • Glass-bottle Mexican sodas are available
  • Variety of authentic Mexican dishes on the menu

Recap of last week’s wager: Our key horse Peace was able to get up for third in the final strides of the Sunland Derby and give us a winning trifecta good for $384.50.

This week’s trifecta key:

Saturday, Keeneland, Race 10, $1 million Toyota Blue Grass Stakes, 6:23 p.m. ET

#6 Marconi (15-1 odds): We made him our key in his last start in the Fountain of Youth and he once again broke a bit sluggishly and found himself in last place heading into the first turn. He made a middle move down the backstretch and was caught wide throughout the entire race. He was able to pass a few horses late to finish fifth in what a thought was a fair effort. I still think we have not seen the best of him yet and I’m going to give him one more shot because his price will be even better here. The Gulfstream track was speed-favoring that day and I think he could get a better scenario over this Keeneland surface. Ryan Moore picking up the mount is interesting.

Strategy on $80 Budget:

$1 trifecta: 6 with 2,4,9,10,11 with 2,4,9,10,11 ($20)

$1 trifecta: 2,4,9,10,11 with 6 with 2,4,9,10,11 ($20)

$1 trifecta: 2,4,9,10,11 with 2,4,9,10,11 with 6 ($20)

$20 to win on #6 Marconi ($20)

ROI Year to date: $568 wagered / $473.30 returned
