Sandman’s Success Just the Beginning for Influencer Griffin Johnson
The week leading up to and including the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands usually draws the most national media attention to the sport of Thoroughbred racing, and this year will be no different as NBC Sports Group is set to provide 15 ½ hours of television broadcasts, supplemented by extensive coverage from other TV, radio, and online networks.
NBC will present a record five-hour block of coverage on Kentucky Derby day, the most amount of time ever on a major broadcast network. The overall package from Thursday to Saturday includes the following highlights:
To kick things off, the network will premiere a 30-minute documentary from longtime Triple Crown and Breeders’ Cup host Tom Hammond titled “My Old Kentucky Home” on Wednesday, May 3, at 12:30 a.m. Eastern on NBCSN.
That documentary, which explores how Kentucky came to be the home of Thoroughbred racing, will be re-broadcast on NBCSN May 3 at 5 p.m. Eastern; Thursday, May 4 at 3:30 p.m. Eastern; and on Friday May 5 within NBCSN’s live Longines Kentucky Oaks coverage and again later that evening after a National Hockey League playoff game. NBC Sports announced that Hammond would step down from hosting duties starting at this year’s Kentucky Derby as he scales down his work schedule, to be replaced by Mike Tirico.
NBC Sports’ live television coverage starts on Thursday, May 4, at 4 p.m. Eastern with a two-hour bloc of programming. In addition to traditional television coverage, NBC offers enhanced live streaming coverage via www.nbcsports.com and the NBC Sports App. The app will offer a mosaic of four different camera angles as well as added features such as horse-by-horse video previews from racing analysts Randy Moss and Bailey, and replays from key Derby prep races.
NBC and NBCSN coverage will be streamed both at www.nbcports.com and the NBC Sports App via the “TV Everywhere” subscription service. The NBC Sports App is available on the iTunes App Store, Google Play, Windows Store, Roku Channel Store, Apple TV, and Amazon Fire.
NBC Sports’ broadcast coverage is listed below along with other TV, radio, and online options. The post time for the 143rd Kentucky Derby is scheduled for 6:34 p.m. Eastern on Saturday, May 6.
A highlight of the week’s radio and online streaming coverage is the upcoming “The Winner’s Circle” podcast, presented by America’s Best Racing in conjunction with SB Nation Radio. Host Bram Weinstein’s scheduled featured guest is four-time Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Bob Baffert. The program airs at 10 a.m. Eastern on the SB Nation Radio network of stations, at www.sbnationlive.com, and on the SB Nation Radio app.
