Snead, a gray or roan Nyquist colt, finished fourth and then third in his first two starts on the Kentucky circuit during late summer 2023. In his third start Oct. 29 at Churchill Downs, he powered clear to a 1 ½-length victory in a one-mile, one-turn maiden race on a sloppy track.

Trainer Brendan Walsh then shipped the colt to Fair Grounds for the start of the New Orleans track’s 2023-24 meet, and Snead was even more impressive in his first start there, taking a 1 1/16-mile allowance optional claiming race by 7 ¼ lengths. He was then elevated to stakes company in the Dec. 23 Gun Runner Stakes at Fair Grounds, also held at 1 1/16 miles. With Jareth Loveberry back for his second consecutive start, Snead rallied strongly in the stretch but could not overtake Track Phantom, finishing second by 1 ¼ lengths. The colt earned five qualifying points for the 2024 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve with the effort.
Snead is out of the unraced A. P. Indy mare Raffle Ticket, who is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Cara Rafaela, the dam of champion and Preakness Stakes winner Bernardini.
