Flying Mohawk recorded a fifth-place finish in the Grade 2 Pilgrim Stakes while still a maiden as a 2-year-old at Belmont at the Big A and then won his maiden race in his next outing in his fourth career start in a 1 1/16-mile turf race at Churchill Downs on Oct. 27, 2024, in what would be his final start of his 2-year-old season.

Flying Mohawk was again victorious in his first start as a 3-year-old when he won an allowance optional claiming race at Fair Grounds on Jan. 30, 2025. He was then sent to race on the all-weather track at Turfway Park for his next start which came in the Grade 3 $777,000 Jeff Ruby Steaks. Facing a nine-horse field in the Jeff Ruby, Flying Mohawk raced near the rear of the 12-horse field and rallied along with eventual winner Final Gambit and got up for second when beaten by 3 1/2 lengths. The Jeff Ruby Stakes was a ponts race on the road to the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve, and with his runner-up finish, Flying Mohawk earned sufficient qualifying points to go to the Derby.
