Agate Road

Agate Road, a Quality Road colt owned by Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable, finished second by a nose in his career debut Aug. 5, 2023, at Saratoga, in a one-mile race moved from turf to dirt due to rain. He returned in a 1 1/16-mile turf race on Sept. 2 and rallied from eighth in a 10-horse field to win by a neck under Irad Ortiz Jr.

The colt was then entered in the Grade 2 Pilgrim Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile turf event Oct. 4 at the Belmont at the Big A meet. Once again, he closed from a rear position to win by 1 ¼ lengths with Ortiz Jr. aboard. Agate Road earned an automatic berth in the Nov. 3 Prevagen Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf with the victory through the “Win and You’re In” Challenge Series. Subsequently in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, Agate Road finished fifth.

Agate Road returned early in 2024 to begin his 3-year-old campaign and was back on the turf in the $125,000 Dania Beach Stakes going one mile on Jan. 6, when he finished second in his seasonal debut.

Trainer Todd Pletcher decided to give Agate Road another chance on the dirt in his following start which came in the Grade 3 $200,000 Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs on Feb. 10. Agate Road gave an admirable effort tp come from off the pace and got up for second. The Sam F. Davis was a points race on the road to the 2024 Kentucky Derby, and he earned 10 qualifying points thanks to his runner-up finish.

Agate Road is out of Grade 1 winner Yellow Agate, by Gemologist.
