On big race days my philosophy is to swing for the fences.

The Jan. 25 Pegasus World Cup card at Gulfstream Park is the marquee day of racing in the winter months. With eight stakes among 13 races and at least nine horses entered for every race, it’s a great day to look for horses with a chance to win at a big price.

The $3 Million, Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes Saturday at Gulfstream Park brings together a field of 12 in what should be an exhilarating race at the distance of 1 1/8 miles, with seven of the dozen entrants having earned $1 million or more in their racing careers.

The Grade 3 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park is an important stop on the Road to the Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve.

Every Sunday Noel Michaels will provide free full-card picks for a one racecard in North America. A veteran handicapper and tournament-play pioneer, Michaels also writes a weekly “Weekend Winners” blog for America’s Best Racing with a focus on key stakes races at marquee tracks. This feature will be straight-forward: full-card picks for one Sunday slate of races of his choosing.

The National Horseplayers Championship (NHC) is the richest and most prestigious annual handicapping tournament of all. It is the culmination of the NHC Tour, a year-long series of NTRA-sanctioned contests and tournaments held across the United States and Canada at racetracks, race books, off-track betting locations, and horse racing and handicapping websites and ADWs that each send their top finishers to the national finals in Las Vegas where they compete for a purse in excess of $3 million.
