If you are a racing fan and not already looking forward to the Saratoga meet, it might be time to check your pulse because Saratoga Springs, N.Y., is the summer place to be for handicappers. The highly anticipated 2026 racing season lasts throughout the heart of the summer starting July 3, usually running five days a week Wednesdays through Sundays and ending on Labor Day, Sept. 7. The Saratoga summer meet will feature 73 stakes races worth more than $23.5 million in purses highlighted by DraftKings Travers Stakes day set for Saturday, Aug. 29.

“The Spa” is not only about high-profile horses and stakes races, it’s also about the summer’s best and most important daily racing and wagering held all season long. For astute horseplayers, the Saratoga season offers tremendous opportunities to cash value tickets and make good money over the course of the meet. Here are some tips and trends to give you the edge on the betting public all summer long at Saratoga. Best of luck and enjoy the season.

Saratoga Main Track Trends

Let’s look for winning main track profile at Saratoga. The first place you must start is to factor early speed prominently into your dirt sprint handicapping. The Spa’s main track is speed favoring at all dirt sprint distances. A total of 155 dirt sprints were run at Saratoga last summer and horses with early speed (as defined as on the pace or within a length of the lead) won 73 of the 155 sprints for 47%. The track actually played more fair last year than in years past when speed horses won 52% of the sprints in 2024 and 58% of the dirt sprints in 2023. Conversely, closers (as defined for this analysis as horses coming from 4+ lengths off the pace) won 24 of the 155 sprints for an anemic 15% win rate that was actually an improvement over 2024 when only 12 of the 159 dirt sprints (8%) were won by closers.

When considering dirt sprint post positions, the three inside posts were by far the most productive in dirt sprints in 2025 with 49% of the winners breaking from posts 1-2-3.

In Saratoga dirt routes including one mile, there were a total of 89 races run at the 2025 summer meet. Just as they did in sprints, inside posts did the best with a 49% win percentage for horses breaking from posts 1-2-3. This is similar to the 55% win rate for the inside posts in 2024.

It pays to have early speed in Saratoga dirt routes but there’s not as much of an advantage as in sprints with speed horses winning 45% of the routes and stalkers (defined as coming from 1-4 lengths off the pace) winning 40%. Statistically it has been the closers coming from 4+ lengths off the pace that are at a disadvantage in Spa dirt routes, winning just 13 of the 89 races (15%) in 2025 and only 13 of the 98 (13%) dirt routes in 2024.

Saratoga Turf Tips

Spa turf sprints run at 5 ½ furlongs on the Mellon outer turf course are a big part of daily racing and wagering at Saratoga with an average of at least one or two turf sprints carded per day. In Saratoga turf sprints, post positions don’t mean a lot until you start talking about large fields with 9-12 runners. In big turf sprint fields, downgrade the three inside posts, particularly the rail, because while inside posts can have success in smaller fields, the inside posts have always underperformed in big fields for more than two decades of turf sprints at Saratoga. Betting the outside horses tends to pay better, too, because so many players unjustly downgrade Spa turf sprinters from outside posts when in reality, the outside posts are often the best place to be.

All types of running styles have fair chances to win Saratoga turf sprints, but the best running style in 2025 was stalkers, who won 27 of the 61 turf sprints at the meet for 44%. Early speed was the best running style in 2024 when they won 20 of that year’s 47 turf sprints for 43%. When it came to closers in turf sprints at last year’s meet, they generally were not a winning proposition with a win percentage of 21%.

In turf routes, Saratoga uses two turf courses. About three times as many routes are carded on the inner turf than on the Mellon (outer) turf course. There were 80 inner turf routes run at the 2025 Saratoga summer meet with an average field size of 8.42 horses per race, and those races were remarkably fair in terms of both running style and post position. Speed horses (won 35% of the races), stalkers (30%), and closers (35%) all won at similar percentages, as did horses from the three inside posts (34%), middle posts (36%), and outside posts (30%).

Speed horses did better last year than they did two years ago in 73 inner turf routes in 2024, when horses on or close to the pace won only 17 times (23% of the races), as opposed to stalkers that season who won 29 races (40%) and closers who won 27 races (37%).

As noted above, all post positions played fair in 2025, but you should pay attention if that trend continues this season because inside posts were more favorable than outside posts at the 2022, 2023, and 2024 summer Spa meets.

Aside from the stats, a visual handicapping angle also applies to inner turf races at the Spa. If you can get to the paddock or get a good view on the simulcast TV feed, look for physically smaller, more athletic-looking horses instead of large, long-striding types. The little guys handle the tight inner course turns nicely, while big bulky horses may not.

The Mellon (outer) turf course hosted 30 routes at last year’s meet with an average field size of 8.32 horses. That course tends to play much more the way that turf handicappers might expect. Inside posts are way better than outside posts, and stalkers have a better win percentage than either speed horses or closers. Horses breaking from the three inside posts won a disproportionate 16 of the 30 (53%) outer turf routes in 2025 while horses breaking from posts 7 and outward won only 5 times (17%). Note that in 2024, outside horses managed to win 13 of 32 races to account for a very good 41% of the races, so stay on top of this trend to see which way it fluctuates this year.

In terms of the best outer turf route running styles, let’s expand our analysis to include the last four seasons to achieve a larger sample size. With a total of 125 outer turf route races run between 2022-’25, the running style advantage belonged to stalkers and closers, leaving only the front-runners at a disadvantage. Speedsters in the four-year sample won only 30 of the 125 races to account for 24% while stalkers won 49 times (39%) and closers won 46 times (37%).

Hopefully we can all benefit from this Spa handicapping primer and win big this summer season. Have a great year at Saratoga and best of luck!
