The Claim-to-Fame Journey of Lava Man
Del Mar is adding three new wrinkles to its extensive wagering menu as a supplement to the track’s standard lineup of betting options for fans at its 2025 summer season of racing and wagering beginning on Friday, July 18.
Daily racing programs at Del Mar will range from eight to 11 races at the upcoming eight-week summer meet, which will feature mostly four-days-a-week racing on Thursdays through Sundays after opening weekend. First post will be 2 p.m. PT most days.
“Our bet menu has proven a winner over the years and we’re expecting no less coming up to this meet,” said Bill Navarro, Del Mar’s director of mutuels. “We’ll be interested to see how the new wagers we’re offering go, but we’re expecting they’ll make the fans happy.”
This season, Del Mar is adding a middle Pick 4 to be offered on races 4-7 on all weekend cards plus opening day. This middle Pick 4 will be in addition to the track’s regular daily early and late Pick 4s.
Del Mar also will offer two special betting pools including a $3 late Pick 3 on the final three races of the day, and a $5 late Daily Double on the last two races of the day. Of note to handicappers, both the $3 late Pick 3 and the $5 late double will have low player-friendly takeout rates of 15%.
Traditional rolling Pick 3 and Daily Double bets will continue to be offered through the end of each day’s card with lower denominations and at the normal takeout rates.
Santa Anita Park began offering these $3 Pick 3 bets and $5 late doubles at a reduced takeout as well as a middle Pick 4 on 10- and 11-race programs on the Southern California circuit last fall. Del Mar is offering these bets, in part, because of the positive enthusiasm that fans showed for these bets at Santa Anita.
Del Mar’s full wagering menu also will include $2 win, place, and show betting, $1 exactas and $2 quinellas, and 10-cent minimum superfectas on all races. There will also be $2 rolling doubles, $1 rolling Pick 3s, and a $1 place pick-all, as well as a 50-cent super high five on the last race of the day. Del Mar also offers a $2 win-place-show parlay on all races but the last.
In addition to the various Pick 4 bets, Del Mar will continue to offer its popular Pick 5 on every day’s first five and last five races.
Finally, Del Mar’s version of the Pick 6 will be a $1 denomination bet on the last six races each day. The majority of the pool (80%) goes to tickets with all six winners while the remaining 20% goes to consolation payoffs. If nobody picks six, 80% of the pool carries over for the next racing day.
