#9 Texas Wedge: Inconsistency has defined this horse over past year or so but you can truly make excuses for each and every one of his poorer performances. Absent a freakish performance by Oleksandra and a career-best effort from Kanthaka, Texas Wedge probably comes out of the June 20 Jaipur Stakes Presented by America’s Best Racing as one of the more highly regarded turf sprinters in the country. Considering he was so close to a pace that saw all of the horses up front fade, he really did put in a massive effort there to finish third. In his prior race, the Daytona Stakes, he was wide all of the way around and just lacked punch late. I’m expecting a peak performance here in his third race off the layoff and he should have a more moderate pace to track and ultimately close into.

Saturday, July 11, Keeneland Race 8, $350,000 Coolmore Jenny Wiley Stakes, post time 4:57 p.m. ET

#2 Juliet Foxtrot: There’s no question that #4 Rushing Fall is the most accomplished horse in this field and, all things being equal, the best horse in the race. However, I think we’ve got an opportunity to beat her here thanks to the presence of #6 Jolie Olimpica whose a horse that is guaranteed to show a ton of speed out of the gate. I don’t think Rushing Fall needs the lead but I think she’s at her best when she’s on the lead. That in mind, we’ll take a swing here with Juliet Foxtrot coming off of a subpar performance last out at Churchill Downs in the Old Forester Mint Julep Stakes. Take note of the fact that she found herself on the lead in that race and that isn’t where she typically prefers to set up shop. She’ll get a really nice stalking trip with some pace to run into here. She’s got an allowance win and a runner-up to Uni over this turf course. She’s gonna run a much better race on Saturday. Here’s hoping we get a bit of a price.
