Kanthaka finished fifth in his career debut before a hard-fought win in his second start for Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. He made his stakes debut in the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes and closed powerfully to take control in the stretch en route to a visually impressive 3 1/4-length win. That victory gave owner West Point Thoroughbreds its 100th career stakes victory.

That victory gave owner West Point Thoroughbreds its 100th career stakes victory. Kanthaka next took his first step on the 2018 Triple Crown trail when he was entered in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes, in which he ralied to finish third and earn his first points toward qualifying for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve.
After finishing sixth, beaten by 7 1/4 lengths in the Grade 2 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes, Kanthaka was cut back in distance to seven-eighths of a mile for the Grade 3 Lazaro Barrera Stakes and got back on track with a hard-fought victory over Beautiful Shot.
