Welcome to Los Ponies Longshots! Each week, America’s Best Racing’s Southern California correspondent Jose Contreras – Los Ponies to those who follow him on Twitter – will provide two or three longshots at 8-to-1 odds or better on the morning line that he identifies as strong value bets. Contreras also will map out a betting strategy for how to play his selections and keep track of his return on investment (ROI).

Stop back each week if you love a longshot!

Saturday, April 15

Santa Anita Park, Race 10, 8:40 p.m. ET

#4 Path of Exile (8-1): His debut was encouraging given that he was off slowly but he still managed to finish a good third while galloping out nicely past the wire. In his second start, he finished fourth as the betting favorite at the tricky distance of seven furlongs. I’ll give him an excuse for that last outing I think we’ll get a good price on him given the move to turf and a low-profile jockey taking the call.

Sunday, April 16

Santa Anita Park, Race 6, 6:30 p.m. ET

#1 Brolazza (10-1): He didn't look all that comfortable in his latest outing so I’ll give him a pass for that one. His two previous turf races were decent and I thought he was heading in the right direction. Gary Stevens was aboard for the ride three starts ago and now gets to reunite with this gelding once again.
