When it comes to making money when handicapping races and betting on horse racing, it’s all about picking winners. Tordjman – DanonymousMan to those who follow him on Twitter – is one of the brightest young minds in the game.

Each Week, Tordjman will provide readers with his two best bets of the weekend and strategies for how to bet them. Tordjman will keep track of his return on investment (ROI) throughout the year and, as a bonus, he will also provide picks for a selection of the key races on the Triple Crown trail and the road to the Breeders’ Cup. Dan was able to manage a positive ROI for his plays in 2016. Come back every week and be sure to follow Tordjman on Twitter.

#5 Browse: This is a pretty competitive turf race that precedes four consecutive stakes races. We’ll go with Browse, a filly who showed significant improvement last out in her first attempt over a route of ground on the turf. The inner turf course plays favorably to speed horses and she figures to get to the lead here, as she did last time out — when she lost by a neck at the wire. A couple of others to look out for in the exotics are #2 Wild About Harry — she’s won over the turf here and comes out of a five furlong sprint for Linda Rice, who is 30 percent going sprint to route — and French shipper #6 Thais for trainer Chad Brown.

#7 Mo Maverick: Few trainers have been hotter at the Spa than George Weaver. Everything he’s sent out in the past few weeks has either won or fired a big race in defeat. Mo Maverick comes in off of an easy stakes score at Monmouth Park and gets the services of Weaver’s first-call rider, Manny Franco, who is also extremely hot at the moment. Furthermore, I like Mo Maverick as much for his own upside as I do for thinking that a few of the likely favorites in this race might be vulnerable; #9 Rocketry ran a huge number in an allowance win last out but he takes a while to get cranked up and I’m not sure 1 1/8 is his optimal distance; #4 Bricks and Mortar is another one trending in the right direction but did catch a dream trip last out — he’s yet to do much wrong but I’m prepared to take a small stand against him (while using in the exotics with Mo Maverick).
