All-Star Baseball Player Jayson Werth Savors Thrill of Elite Horse Racing Competition With Dornoch

04.11.2024

Spend a beautiful spring day at Keeneland with retired Major League Baseball All-Star outfielder and World Series champion Jayson Werth, a part owner of 2024 Kentucky Derby hopeful Dornoch. Werth has enjoyed rekindling the thrill of elite competition through racehorses.

Dornoch entered the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes April 6 at Keeneland as one of the top Kentucky Derby contenders, attempting to follow in the footsteps of his older brother Mage, who won the first jewel of the Triple Crown in 2023.

Werth, who won the World Series with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2008, chatted with fans at the Lexington racetrack leading up to the big race. He also explained that after retiring from pro baseball after 22 years, including 15 seasons in the big leagues, there was a competitive void to fill in his life that his recent venture into horse racing ownership has quenched. Winning a race, Werth said, generates a feeling similar to the one you get from winning a big game, and he’s grown to really appreciate the sport of horse racing.

After a fourth-place finish in the Blue Grass Stakes, Donoch will go on to Churchill Downs to compete in the run for the roses May 4 with a shot at history, and Werth is savoring his ride on the Kentucky Derby trail.
